San Antonio Spurs’ first round draft pick Dylan Harper reacts to a question at a news conference to introduce the team’s rookies at Victory Capital Performance Center in San Antonio, Saturday, June 28, 2025. The Spurs began Summer League practices Tuesday, but Harper will miss the California Classic with a minor groin injury. The team is hopeful he will be able to play during the Las Vegas Summer League beginning July 10.

It didn’t take long for Dylan Harper to establish himself as the leader of the Spurs’ Summer League squad.

“He has a powerful voice,” fellow rookie Carter Bryant said of the No. 2 overall pick in last week’s NBA draft.

“When he speaks, everybody listens," Bryant added. "There are no negotiations, no speaking over him. He has that kind of presence.”

Unfortunately for the Summer Spurs, they will have to wait to see Harper take charge in a game. The 6-foot-6 guard will travel with the team to San Francisco later this week, but he won’t play in any of the three games at the California Classic due to a “minor groin issue,” a team spokesperson said Tuesday after the Summer League team’s first minicamp practice.

The Spurs are hopeful Harper will make his Summer League debut in Las Vegas on July 10 when they face Philadelphia, the first of at least five games they will play in Sin City.

The Spurs’ opener in the Bay Area is against Miami on Saturday.

The Spurs did not disclose when Harper suffered the injury, but Spurs assistant coach Mike Noyes stressed that it is a “minor” ailment.

“He’s doing OK,” said Noyes, who will coach the Summer League team in San Francisco and Vegas. “He’s been on the court.”

Like Bryant, whom the Spurs selected 14th overall, Noyes is impressed with Harper’s leadership.

The team is hopeful he will be able to play during the Las Vegas Summer League beginning July 10.

“He’s been a terrific teammate,” Noyes said. “You can already hear his vocal leadership, so we’re excited for whenever he does rejoin us.”

Noyes said it’s clear Harper and Bryant are high-character players.

“They are so excited to be here, so some of it has been having to dial them back a little bit,” Noyes said of the two 19-year-old lottery picks.

“They want to be in the gym all the time, so we got two workers,” Noyes said. “Our front office doesn’t really miss on the person side of things.”

Harper isn’t the only Summer League player who will rest at the California Classic. Second-year forward Riley Minix will also travel to San Francisco but won’t see any action due to his ongoing recovery from shoulder surgery.

The Spurs signed Minix as an undrafted free agent in October 2024 after he averaged 22.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a fifth-year senior at Morehead State.

Minix spent most of the season with the Austin Spurs on a two-way contract before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury Jan. 1 in a G League game. The Florida native underwent surgery Jan. 14 to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

In 16 games with Austin, he showcased his sharpshooting skills, averaging 20.5 points while connecting on 41.1% from 3-point range on 7.8 attempts per game.

“He looks great,” Noyes said. “We are very excited for him. He’s put in a lot of time the last six months. He’s worked as hard as anyone. He’s right on pace. Don’t know exactly when he’ll come back, but we’re excited for him to join us.”

Minix and Harrison Ingram, whom the Spurs drafted in the second round in 2024 out of North Carolina, are restricted free agents after the club tendered two-way contract qualifying offers to them last week.

Stephon Castle also participated in Tuesday’s workout. The 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year, who was the fourth overall pick last year after he helped Connecticut win the national championship, is working out with the Summer League squad even though he’s not part of its roster.

“It just speaks to his character,” Noyes said. “He’s a competitor. When he steps on the court, it doesn’t matter who he’s playing against, he wants to win.”

Bryant said he’s trying to learn as much as he can from Castle and the other older players during practice.

“I’m just trying to be a sponge,” he said. “Whether that’s talking to Steph, talking to Harrison, talking to all these guys.”

Noyes said he wants Bryant to concentrate on honing his defensive game in Summer League play.

“We’ve been clear on his role,” Noyes said. "We don’t expect him to have all the answers, but he needs to set the tone defensively for us. He moves really well, and that is a huge reason why we drafted him. The bonus is that he’s very skilled offensively, so we believe he can build out on that over the years.

“But it starts with being able to defend the other team’s best player.”

Bryant said he’s up to the challenge.

“The one thing I want to bring is the physicality, being able to guard multiple positions, know the guy’s tendencies, guard multiple actions and make multiple efforts,” he said. “Everybody wants to score the ball, but how do I separate myself? How do I get those early minutes? How do I find myself on the floor? Defense is something I could do to get on the floor.”

In all, the Summer League roster boasts 18 players.

In addition to Ingram, four other players return from last year’s squad: Minix, Ibrahima Diallo, Nate Mensah and Jameer Nelson Jr.

The team also includes undrafted free agents Chibuzo Agbo, Mouhamet Diouf, Jacksen Moni, Noah Farrakhan and Josh Uduje.
