Spurs need big man to back up Victor Wembanyama in free agency
France’s center Victor Wembanyama, France’s guard Matthew Strazel (85) and France’s forward Guerschon Yabusele (7) react during the exhibition game between France and Serbia ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, in the LDLC Arena in Decines-Charpieu, eastern France, on July 12, 2024. The Spurs will be looking for big men in free agency to back up Wembanyama and could look to Yabusele, who played last season in Philadelphia.
The Spurs came out of last week’s NBA draft ecstatic at their good fortune.
With the No. 2 pick, the Spurs selected Dylan Harper, a 19-year-old scoring guard from Rutgers who scouts believe to possess All-NBA upside.
With the 14th selection, the club drafted Carter Bryant, a 6-foot-7 forward from Arizona who could plug a role on the wing for seasons to come.
As promising as the Spurs’ rookie class is, however, neither newcomer stands to fill the club’s biggest glaring need — a backup big man to ease the pounding on Victor Wembanyama.
“We don’t ever approach the draft as just trying to fill a need,” Spurs general manager Brian Wright said. “There are a lot of ways to build your team out.”
The next step in the Spurs’ journey toward playoff relevance begins Monday. Free agency opens for business at 5 p.m., when teams will be officially allowed to negotiate with players on the market.
Expect Wright to put in a call to a handful of very tall men.
Other than Wembanyama, no player on the Spurs’ roster as it stands now is taller than 6-8.
Three players who saw backup minutes at center last season — Sandro Mamukelashvili (6-11), Charles Bassey (6-10) and Bismack Biyombo (6-8) — are set to enter free agency themselves.
The 6-8 Jeremy Sochan spent time as an unorthodox second-unit center, and would probably be the Spurs’ top backup at the position if the season opened today.
Luckily for the Spurs, it does not.
The free agency market stands to be rife with intriguing options who could bolster the Spurs’ frontcourt.
As a team over the salary cap, the Spurs have a $14.1-million mid-level exception and a $5.1-million bi-annual exception to spend on outside free agents, along with veteran minimum contracts to hand out.
Candidates who could fall in the Spurs’ price range include Milwaukee’s Brook Lopez and Bobby Portis, Boston’s Luke Kornet and Al Horford and Atlanta’s Clint Capela.
The 37-year-old Lopez could be gettable due to his history with new Spurs coach Mitch Johnson. The two played together in college at Stanford.
Another big man who could come at a bargain is Philadelphia’s Guerschon Yabusele, a teammate of Wembanyama’s on the French national team.
Asked if the team feels confident it might be able to land some big man help once the free agency bell opens, Wright remained coy.
“Can’t tell you that,” he said.
In addition to scratching their big man itch, the Spurs can also be expected to look into bringing in another 3-point shooter or two.
The Spurs quietly improved in that area last season, ranking ninth in the league in 3-pointers made (1,158) and 20th in percentage (35.7%).
Still, teams can never have enough shooting on the roster, and there are some interesting names available this summer. They include Memphis’ Santi Aldama and Luke Kennard, Minnesota’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Brooklyn’s Cam Thomas and Cleveland’s Ty Jerome.
The Spurs also have the assets to make a play in the trade market, with Brooklyn’s Cam Johnson a popular target.
On the eve of free agency Sunday, the Spurs took care of a bit of internal housekeeping, presenting qualifying offers to two-way players Harrison Ingram and Riley Minix. By doing so, the Spurs made both second-year players restricted free agents, granting the team the right to match outside offers for them.
The biggest name off last season’s Spurs roster set to hit free agency is Chris Paul. The soon-to-be 40-year-old future Hall of Famer started all 82 games for the Spurs last season, but is not expected to return.
Whatever the comings and goings over the next couple of weeks, the goal for the Spurs remains the same.
Once the dust clears, they hope to be one slow and steady step closer to breaking a six-season playoff hiatus.
“What we’ve tried to do is just put one foot in front of the other, stay head down and hopefully we look up some day and we’re right where we want to be,” Wright said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do over the coming months and coming years, but our hope is to be there as soon as we can.”
