Seeking to boost their frontcourt depth, the Spurs on Wednesday selected Arizona’s Carter Bryant with the 14th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-7, 220-pound Bryant is a versatile, athletic 3-and-D player who averaged 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.0 blocks as a freshman for the Wildcats last season while mainly coming off the bench.
Known for his spot-up shooting, Bryant shot 37.1% from 3-point range last season on 2.8 attempts per game.
Spurs general manager Brian Wright said the Spurs were “pleasantly surprised” that Bryant lasted until they were on the clock at No. 14.
“We had Carter pretty high on our board and actually (thought about trading up) to potentially go and get him,” Wright said.
Asked why they had him rated so high, Wright said, “He’s super versatile. He’s a big wing that can guard four positions. He spaces the floor well. He’s a really good athlete. He’s a smart young kid and he’s got the right character and makeup we look for.”
Bryant, a 19-year-old native of Riverside, Calif., recorded a maximum (running) vertical leap of 39.5 inches at the NBA draft combine last month. He has a 6-11.75 wingspan.
“He did really, really well at the combine,” ESPN analyst Jay Bilas said. “He’s what people would say is the prototypical 3-and-D guy, because he does make 3s. When he’s got time in a catch-and-shoot situation, he makes them at a good percentage.
The Spurs obtained the No. 14 pick in the 2022 trade that sent Dejounte Murray to Atlanta.
