CNBC.com

Spurs announce new jersey patch sponsor in French firm Ledger

Peter J. Holt, managing partner for Spurs Sports and Entertainment, shakes hands with Pascal Gauthier, CEO of Ledger, during a press conference announcing the Spurs’ partnership with Ledger at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

As part of the Spurs’ continuing efforts to evolve from what they term a “legacy franchise” to a “formative global brand,” they announced Tuesday their jerseys will sport a patch promoting Ledger after the French digital asset security firm signed a multi-year sponsorship deal.

“The Spurs have always had incredible international engagement and this is just another step to reaffirm that and root ourselves as a global enterprise,” Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt said at a news conference at the Frost Bank Center, where players Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson modeled jerseys sporting the Ledger logo.

The partnership also continues the franchise’s efforts to build strong ties with France after it selected French phenom Victor Wembanyama No. 1 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft.

The 21-year-old All-Star center is the latest in an impressive line of French stars who have played for the Spurs, a list that includes Hall of Famer Tony Parker and Boris Diaw.

In all, seven players from France have played for the Spurs since they entered the NBA in 1976.

“We have a long history with French basketball and you saw the excitement around the Spurs when we played in Paris in January,” Spurs CEO R.C. Buford said.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a source described it as “big” for the Spurs and worth a “great deal more” than the initial jersey patch sponsorship deal with Frost Bank the club announced in 2018.

Ledger chairman and CEO Pascal Gauthier said the 11-year-old company, which boasts that it secures more than 20% of the world’s cryptocurrencies and that its security platform is used by more than 70 organizations worldwide, will benefit greatly from the transaction in terms of marketing.

“The value for money the Spurs presented is really good,” Gauthier said. “You’re buying like so many billions of impressions, so many hundreds of millions of eyeballs that are looking at the Spurs, looking at the jerseys.

“And with Victor being the face of the NBA, he’s out there all the time everywhere in the world. He was in China the other day, and he’s already a superstar after just (two seasons), and we can hope for 20 more seasons.”

The Spurs haven’t had a jersey patch sponsor since 2024 when their deal with Self Financial, the Austin-based financial technology firm, ended after two seasons.

The Spurs, the Charlotte Hornets and the Los Angeles Clippers were the only NBA teams without a patch partner last season, which Holt said did not bother him.

“We don’t do anything with a sense of scarcity or a sense of, hey, we have to get something done because, oh, all the rest of the NBA teams have something and we are going to miss out,” Holt said. “That’s not our style. We want to have the right partnerships at the right time. This is a perfect representation of that.”

Said Buford, “What was important was finding the right partner to be with. With Ledger, we feel like we really amplify a lot of the values and a lot of our foundational history with an international brand that is innovative and looking to the future. They’re an important part of our business model.”

NBA teams collected $1.62 billion in sponsorship revenue for the 2024-25 season, an increase of 8% since the 2023-24 campaign and 91% from $850 million five years ago, according to third-party data firm SponsorUnited, CNBC.com reported this month.

A key factor in the NBA’s rise in revenue is the proliferation of sponsor patches on team jerseys, Bob Lynch, founder and CEO of the data firm, told CNBC.com.

Most jersey patch deals are worth at least $5 million annually for teams, with the top end of the deals being worth north of $10 million, Sportspro.com reported last October. In September 2021, the Los Angeles Lakers and Bibigo, the top food company in Korea, entered a five-year jersey patch deal worth more than $100 million.

The number of jersey patch deals, which were introduced to the NBA in 2017, more than doubled year over year last season. There were six first-time NBA jersey partners, contributing more than $80 million in new spending this year, according to the SponsorUnited report. The deals typically run three years on average, Lynch said.

“It was sort of this mad dash to bring in these deals, which generate a lot of buzz and a lot of revenue,” Lynch told CNBC.com.

In addition to sponsoring the jersey patch, Ledger will become the presenting partner of Spurs Tech & Basketball, which uses sports and technology applications to engage participants ranging in age from 10-14.

“We’re really excited to bring Ledger into the USA and into San Antonio in a huge way,” Holt said. “It’s going to be an amazing and exciting partnership and the next couple of years are going to be really exciting for Spurs fans.”
