Welcome to the thread. During the month of June, we are talking NBA Draft. As we lead up to the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25th, we will be revisiting the Spurs draft choices. Today we remember the 2021 NBA Draft.
The Spurs chose Josh Primo from Alabama with the 12th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. It was a surprising pick, but he showed a lot of upside for a young player: good shooting, particularly off the catch, with a smooth release and good mechanics. Unfortunately, Primo was (in his words) dealing with a previous trauma, and he was waived four games into his second season while facing charges of indecent exposure (which were eventually dropped). He returned a year later with the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2023-24 season and played one game with the Windy City Bulls last October before appearing to leave the game entirely.
With the 41st pick in the draft, the Spurs chose Iowa Hawkeye’s swingman Joe Wieskamp. He initially signed a two-way contract which was converted to a full contract in March of 2022. As fans may recall, the Spurs had been actively retooling the roster.
They had traded Bryn Forbes and received Juan Hernangomez, who was later flipped for Tomas Satoransky, who was later waived. They also traded Drew Eubanks and Thaddeus Young for Goran Dragić, who was also waived.
The Spurs then re-signed Wieskamp in August before waiving him in October.
He bounced around the G-League acquiring stints with Wisconsin Herd, Raptors 905, Texas Legends, and Maine Celtics. Wieskamp is currently South East Melbourne Phoenix in Australia.
