Corliss Williamson is set to join Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s staff as an assistant next season after spending the last two years on Chris Finch’s bench in Minnesota, a league source confirmed Friday.
The addition of Williamson, 51, gives the Spurs a coach with a long history of success as a player.
As a 6-foot-7, 245-pound forward nicknamed “Big Nasty” by his AAU coach, the native of Russellville, Ark., was named most outstanding player of the 1994 Final Four after averaging 26.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in the Arkansas Razorbacks’ two wins.
Williamson scored 23 points in the 76-72 win over Duke in the national championship game.
After Sacramento selected him 13th overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, Williamson enjoyed a 12-year pro career during which he earned the 2001-2002 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award after averaging 13.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game for Detroit and collected an NBA title with the Pistons in 2004.
From his rookie season through 2006-2007, Williams scored a league high 5,192 points off the bench. In 822 career games, including 293 career starts, for three teams, he averaged 11.2 points on 49% shooting from the field and nearly 4.0 rebounds.
Williamson’s NBA coaching career includes stints as an assistant with Sacramento (2013-16), Orlando (2016-18) and Phoenix (2018-20) after he spent three seasons as head coach at Central Arkansas from 2010-13, where he forged a 22-62 record.
