Buford)。

Spurs’ Sean Elliott recalls late David Greenwood’s influence on career
Former UCLA standout David Greenwood talks about his career during a National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame induction event on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021, in Kansas City, Mo. Greenwood, who came to the San Antonio Spurs in the 1985 trade that sent George Gervin to the Chicago Bulls, died Sunday at 68.
In Spurs lore, David Greenwood is remembered as the player acquired in the unpopular trade that sent future Hall of Famer George Gervin to Chicago in October 1985.
But there was another lesser-known aspect to Greenwood’s association with the Spurs. As an elder statesman in his 12th and final NBA season, he had a second stint with the club during which he mentored a young, impressionable Sean Elliott.
“He was a great vet for me,” Elliott said. “I have a lot of good stories about him, but none I can actually tell because he really kind of saved me from the perils away from the court.”
Greenwood, a 6-foot-9, 222-pound power forward who played three-plus seasons with the Spurs after the Gervin deal, died Sunday in Riverside, Calif., after a bout with cancer. He was 68.
“That was really sad news for me,” said Elliott, who went on to become a two-time All-Star and a key member of the Spurs’ 1999 championship team. “I really appreciated him,”
The Spurs traded Greenwood to Denver midway through the 1988-89 season, but he returned as a free agent in 1990-91 to play one more season with the franchise on a team that included young stars David Robinson and Elliott and a coaching staff headed by Larry Brown that included assistants Gregg Popovich and R.C. Brown, Popovich and Buford arrived in San Antonio when Greenwood was still on the team toward the end of his first stint with the club.
“One of the first players Coach Pop and I met when we came to the San Antonio as assistant coaches almost four decades ago, David was a warrior both on the court and in life," Buford, now the franchise’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Our condolences go out to the Greenwood family during this tough time.”
Elliott was 21 and in his second year in the league when Greenwood began tutoring him. In addition to having starred in college at Pac-10 schools (Elliott at Arizona, Greenwood at UCLA), they both entered the league as high draft picks (Elliott third overall in 1989, Greenwood second overall a decade earlier) and made NBA All-Rookie teams.
“He was a good guy as far as keeping you focused and teaching you about the pitfalls away from the court,” said Elliott, now 57 and set to enter his 25th season as the Spurs’ TV analyst.
Greenwood averaged 10.2 points and 7.9 rebounds in 823 career regular season games, but he managed only 3.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 63 games in 1990-91 while backing up Terry Cummings. That squad finished 55-27 and led the league in defensive rating but was upset by Golden State in the first round of the playoffs.

“He was vet’s vet, a true vet who played hard,” Elliott said of Greenwood. “When I got here, it was after he had torn his Achilles and had surgery, so he wasn’t as athletic as he used to be, but he still showed flashes. Just a solid overall player and just a really good guy to have on the team.”
Greenwood was two years removed from averaging 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls when he learned while listening to the radio he had been traded to the Spurs for Gervin just days before the Spurs’ season opener.
The UCLA alumnus was a solid performer for the Spurs, averaging 11.6 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 79 games in 1986-87, his best season with San Antonio. In one of his best outings, he hauled down 20 rebounds against Utah, prompting Spurs owner Angelo Drossos to say, “You could lock some forwards in a gym by themselves and they still wouldn’t get 20 rebounds.”
But Greenwood played for what was then two of the worst teams in franchise history after reaching the playoffs in his first season, and fans yearned for the glory days of the late 1970s and early 1980s when Gervin won four league scoring titles while playing for championship contenders.
In nine seasons with the Spurs, Gervin averaged 27.3 points per game. Greenwood came to the Spurs with a 12.6 average.
“The Iceman was really at the end of his career,” former Spurs media relations director Wayne Witt said. “He was still a good player, but he wasn’t a great player. But nonetheless he was a hero in this town and whoever came in his stead — David Greenwood — was going to suffer the consequences.”
Greenwood also played for Detroit and won an NBA championship as a reserve with the Pistons in 1990.
After starring at Verbum Dei High in Los Angeles, Greenwood began his college career at UCLA just months after legendary coach John Wooden shocked Bruins fans by announcing his retirement in March 1975.
A four-year starter, Greenwood played in the 1976 Final Four and earned first-team All-America honors as a junior and senior to become the first UCLA player to do so since Bill Walton in 1972-74.
The Bulls drafted him second overall in 1979 after losing a coin toss with the Los Angeles Lakers, who selected future Hall of Famer Magic Johnson No. 1 after acquiring the pick in a trade with New Orleans.
After six seasons, Chicago traded Greenwood to San Antonio in a deal engineered by Spurs coach Cotton Fitzsimmons with Drossos’ blessing.
Gervin was 33 at the time coming off a season in which he averaged just 21.2 points, his lowest mark in years, and was viewed as an impediment to the progress of up-and-coming guard Alvin Robertson. The Iceman’s lax practice habits — Fitzsimmons was a disciplinarian — also reportedly played a role in the trade.
Slowed by tendinitis in both heals that required offseason surgery, Greenwood averaged 6.1 points in his last season with Chicago. Drossos said at the time the trade "probably would be the most unpopular move in the history of the franchise.”
In retirement, Greenwood coached at his high school alma mater, leading Verbum Dei to state titles in 1998 and 1999.
But Elliott will always remember him as the veteran who showed him the ropes — and also helped popularize his “Ninja” nickname.
“Remember those ‘Ninja 32’ T-shirts? That was David Greenwood,” Elliott said. "He put those together. He came to me and asked me if I wouldn’t mind him putting my likeness on a T-shirt and make it a Ninja T-shirt. He was the guy.
“When I see those, it reminds me of David. He was just a great teammate. On the court, for sure, but definitely off the court.”
