The NBA draft lottery gods have shined on the Spurs again.
Armed with the eighth-best odds in Monday’s selection drawing the Spurs came out with the No. 2 overall pick.
It will mark the third consecutive season the Spurs will draft within the top 4.
The Dallas Mavericks were the day’s big winner, cashing in a 1.8% chance at landing the No. 1 pick and the right to draft Duke freshman Cooper Flagg.
Despite missing out on Flagg, the Spurs had to be satisfied with their outcome.
Not only did they jump six spots with their own pick, they also own the No. 14 pick obtained from Atlanta as part of the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade.
The Spurs are the only team in this year’s draft with a pair of lottery selections.
Between their pair of lottery picks, the Spurs entered with nearly a 30% chance of landing a top 4 pick. They had a 6.7% chance of pocketing the No. 1 overall pick for the fourth time in club history.
The first three times the Spurs struck the lottery bonanza produced three of the most consequential rookies in team annals – David Robinson (1987), Tim Duncan (1997) and Victor Wembanyama (2023).
The Spurs snagged 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle with the No. 4 selection in last summer’s draft.
