Nuggets hold off Clippers as Jamal Murray emphatically prevents reprise of Game 4, 131-115
Game 6 takes place in Los Angeles Thursday night 9:00 PM CDT
Stellar shooting efforts from lead guards Jamal Murray and Russell Westbrook emboldened the Nuggets to grab a tight hold of Game 5 on the way to a convincing 131-115 triumph. Murray initiated an 11-0 fourth quarter run to put the finishing touches on the Clippers and prevent any thoughts of the Game 4 comeback from happening again.
With Jokic (13 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds) getting a rare night ‘off,’ it was Murray (43 points, 7 assists, and 3 steals) and Westbrook (21 points) that kept Los Angeles at bay tonight. Aaron Gordon (23 points and 4 rebounds) had another unsung statline tonight, while Christian Braun (11 points and 12 rebounds) had his most impactful game of the series.
Los Angeles’ Kawhi Leonard (20 points, 11 assists, and 9 rebounds) and James Harden (11 points and 8 rebounds) picked the worst time to put up relatively subpar numbers. Ivica Zubac (27 points) shined brightly again with the support of Bogdan Bogdanovic (18 points), Kris Dunn (15 points), and Norm Powell (12 points), who performed well enough in the tough road game to keep their team within shouting distance in the second and third quarters.
LA’s starters put up 19 of the team’s 23 points in the quarter and they had to do it the hard way with only one three-pointer going in. Murray and Gordon supplied much of the firepower for the Nuggets with Jokic as fulcrum, and they were able to push the ball in transition off of many Clippers’ misses to gain the important early advantage. Denver left the first period up 35-23.
Denver’s Murray and Westbrook carried the entirety of their team’s offense while Jokic got some needed benchtime. Leonard drove to the basket with abandon while eschewing his jumper. Zubac continue his series-long success with his array of floaters and push-shots in the lane. Undetterred Murray knocked down a difficult jumper over Batum and Westbrook willed home an and-1 over Bogdanovic to keep the pressure on LA. Dunn connected on his first two (very open) threes. Despite both teams shooting increasingly well, the Nuggets went to the break still up 67-59.
Murray did his best to personally aid Denver in busting the game wide open in a third quarter where the Nuggets got out to a 13-4 run. Los Angeles again was able to maintain pace - with Norm Powell and Dunn initiating most of the driving - but still not putting a dent into their deficit. Harden and Leonard, in particular, abandoned their outside shooting opportunities to drive it into Denver’s smaller frontline. Westbrook and Braun erased all of the Clippers’ gains with back-to-back threes to close the third.
Observations
- A foregone conclusion - Stephon Castle just seemed to be a perfect fit as a Spur.
- This was the most frustrated I’ve seen Leonard look in some time.
- Jokic’s struggles at the line this series reminds me of the trouble Tim Duncan had throughout the 2005 playoffs. Duncan had a nagging ankle injury to work through, though.
- Sequence of the Game #1: Partway through the opening stanza, Murray put Nic Batum on skates in the paint and scored a nifty lay-in.
- Sequence of the Game #2: Halfway through the third quarter, Murray lofted a feathery lob to a streaking Gordon for an alley-oop to make it a 17 point game.
Game Rundown
The teams came out of the gates looking no worse for wear after Saturday’s dramatic Game 4. A spry Leonard took it nearly the length of the court of a Klaw Slam, and an equally spry Murray took it down the middle for a similar dunk. Denver drew several Clippers fouls in the first minutes. Christian Braun found a cutting Gordon baseline for an and-1 that put the Nuggets up nine. Harden frequently attacked deep into the paint like he time-traveled into the “Seven Seconds or Less” Suns offense. No matter who was charged to guard him, Murray continued to do damage from distance. On successive possessions, Jokic threaded the needle to Braun for a lay-up, and tossed in a floater over Zubac. The teams stayed glued at 28-19 for a while, and Denver left the first up a dozen.
Murray and Westbrook continued their shooting prowess to start the second quarter, while Bogdanovic tripled the LA three-pointer count to… three. The second of Westbrook’s threes for the frame put Denver up 13. Murray continued to pop in and out of pick-and-rolls to knock down increasingly harder shots. Bogdanovic was whistled for this third foul, but remained in the game. Dunn came alive from the field to hit two threes and close the gap to single digits. The teams impressively traded baskets over the rest of the half, but the Clippers had no answer for Denver’s bucket getting capabilities. The fast-paced first half yielded an eight point lead for the Nuggets.
With Zubac draped all over him, Murray hit a shotclock-beating 20-footer to start the third. Jokic fed Murray for another pair of threes and the Nuggets’ lead grew to 17. With the weight of Denver’s offensive pressure bearing down on them, LA continued attacking the rim to grow the foul count and slow the game down in the hopes of chipping away at the margin. Bogdanovic picked up where he left off in the second quarter to hit a corner three, and with Powell’s driving lay-up, the Denver lead did shrink to eight. Westbrook and Bogdanovic chirped at each other and were assigned technicals. But it was Westbrook and Braun’s threes that made it 99-83 Nuggets heading into the fourht.
