Spurs’ Barnes a nominee for the NBA’s Social Justice Award
St. Philip’s College President Dr. Adena Williams Loston left, gives gifts to San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes, center, and Brittany Barnes, right, after they announced a generous donation of $250,000 to the AlamoPROMISE tuition-free program, at St. Philip’s College on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025 in San Antonio. The donation with benefit students at St. Philip’s College, a Historically Black College and University and Hispanic-Serving Institution within the Alamo Colleges District.
Spurs forward Harrison Barnes has been named one of five finalists for the NBA’s 2025 Social Justice Award, the league announced Wednesday.
Miami’s Bam Adebayo, Toronto’s Chris Boucher, Boston’s Jrue Holiday and New Orleans’ C.J. McCollum are the other nominees for the honor, which is named after NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Barnes, 32, wasted little time making his presence felt in San Antonio after arriving via trade with Sacramento last summer.
“The game of basketball has been extremely fruitful for me and my family,” Barnes said. “Every city we go to, my wife Brittany and I always try to make it a point to give back to the community.”
That much was abundantly clear during Barnes’ first season with the Spurs.
In February, Harrison and Brittany Barnes announced a $250,000 donation to AlamoPROMISE, a tuition-free program at St. Philip’s College, the largest Historically Black College (HBCU) and Hispanic-Serving Institution in the country.
He also set in motion a basketball court refurbishment program in three cities across Texas and Mexico, including one at San Antonio’s Guadalupe Community Center, where more than 40% of nearby residents live below poverty level.
“Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the power of community and support,” Barnes said after winning the NBA’s monthly Community Assist Award in February. “Now as part of the San Antonio community, my wife Brittany and I are honored to give back and help invest in the future of this incredible city.”
In December, Barnes donated $50,000 to UNICEF USA to support humanitarian aid across the United States. He contributed $100,000 to Athletes in Action, a worldwide organization meant to support athletes physically, mentally and spiritually.
Barnes also gifted $10,000 to the Los Angeles Nomadic Division, which provides free art programs in Southern California.
Closer to his new home in San Antonio, Barnes has dedicated personal time integrating with local nonprofits like Mi Corazon Ministries, Black Outside, Gardopia Gardens and others.
Previous winners of the NBA’s Social Justice Award include Carmelo Anthony, Reggie Bullock, Stephen Curry and Karl-Anthony Towns, last year’s honoree.
This year’s winner will be announced at an undetermined point during the ongoing NBA playoffs. The league has pledged to donate $100,000 to the non-profit of the winner’s choice.
The way those in San Antonio see it, the community has already won simply for knowing Barnes.
“The way he carries himself off the court, how he impacts this community and this city in such a short time – not only financially but really being present – is an impactful as anything he’s done on the court,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. He’s a guy who just got here last summer. It’s something that probably should get more attention.”
