Lakers weather Wolves’ fourth quarter comeback to take Game 2 94-85
Luka Doncic outscores Minnesota on his own in the first quarter and the Lakers’ lead mostly held up over the remaining 36 minutes
The Minnesota Timberwolves almost pulled off a comeback in the fourth quarter, by forcing 10 straight misses and getting to within nine points on several occasions, before a LeBron James steal and transition lay-up Los Angeles secured the important Game 2 win.
The Lakers raced out to a 22-point first half lead behind a dominant first-half effort from Luka Doncic and turned back two concerted Minnesota comeback attempts in the second half. The Lakers deflated the Wolves slowly but surely by stifling their paths into and through the lane and luring them into settling for long jumpers that hardly found their target. Doncic and James scored or assisted on 19 of LA’s first 24 field goals to hold a comfortable double-digit lead over most of the last three quarters.
Los Angeles, like their Clippers counterparts in Inglewood, were spearheaded by their leading stars - Doncic (31 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists) and James (21 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists) - while getting a boost from super-third-wheel Austin Reaves (16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists).
Minnesota’s flat first-half performance was in part due to subdued starts for Anthony Edwards (25 points and 6 rebounds) and Julius Randle (27 points and 6 assists). Key rotation players Naz Reid (9 points) and Donte DiVincenzo (4 points) were flustered by foul trouble in their limited minutes.
From the tip, Los Angeles focused on shutting down passing lanes and forcing Minnesota to start their ineffective offensive actions further and further out. Doncic had two threes as part of a 25-10 stomping as the Wolves managed to hit the ignominuous 25 (field goal) - 20 (3-point) - 50 (free throw) output. Doncic gained a lot of his production in isos against Rudy Gobert. Edwards’ first field goal came after a 4:30 drought for Minnesota. Doncic (16) outscored the Wolves (15) for the stanza, and the Lakers left it up 19.
The second quarter continued to be the Doncic and James show, as the Lakers went up as much as 22. Julius Randle valiantly tried to counter the LA detonation with his unique Zach Randolph-ish ways. Edwards continued to probe the Lakers’ defensive shell with increasingly positive results. Yet Minnesota could not get closer than 14, and the Lakers went to the half up 15.
Edwards took on himself to will Minnesota into an earnest comeback attempt and helped trim the Lakers advantage to 11. Doncic and new friends immediately enlarged that cushion to 20. The Wolves would not pass the 60 point mark until 1:33 in the period. Despite that initial run by Minnesota, Los Angeles headed into the fourth quarter having actually added one point to their halftime margin.
Observations
- I am trying to watch this game on mute so that I can shut out Reggie Miller’s voice.
- There’s not much I like about Randle’s game - especially in these games.
- Sequence of the Game #1: Late in the opening half, Doncic bodied his defender into the middle of the paint, and flippantly well, flipped a dime to a cutting Dorian Finney-Smith for a power jam.
- “Bon Chance” Sequence of the Game #2: Gobert came up with a steal late in the first half, and inexplicably threw a floater into the hoop at the other end.
- These Doncic commercials are decently funny!
Game Rundown
The Lakers mounted a 9-0 run to get itself into the driver’s seat early. Doncic, in particular, was able to get to his spots and either score or facilitate. Randle did generate five of the Wolves’ first eight points. A transition three from Gabe Vincent put LA up ten. Minnesota stayed glued to eight points until the 4:06 mark with Edwards contributing one sole point. Yikes. After Doncic hit a glaringly open three, the Lakers had as many 3-pointers (3) as Minnesota had field goals total (3). The Wolves settled for long shot after long shot and the frequent misses allowed LA to run with ease. Vincent’s three put them up 34-15 after one.
Naz Reid and Donte DiVincenzo picked up three fouls apiece, which made the rotations difficult for the Wolves. Right after I typed this, Reid picked up his fourth foul on a questionable pick. Less meaningfully, Jaxson Hayes was assessed his third foul moments later. James’ catch-and-shoot three doubled the Lakers’ score over the Wolves. Randle continued to be the only player willing to explore the LA interior for buckets and free throw chances. Little-used Terence Shannon came in for Minnesota and made his presence felt at both ends. With Doncic and James almost matching their counterparts by themselves, LA coasted into the half up 58-43.
The Lakers’ Reaves asserted himself on offense to start the third, as Minnesota crept closer with the help of Edwards’ acrobatics. Doncic helped stage a 9-0 run to end the brief Wolves run. After Randle converted a difficult floater, Doncic cooked him at the other end. A Rui Hachimura stepback jumper pushed their lead back up to 20, and the went to the final frame up 81-65.
