It’s official. Stephon Castle has been named a finalist for the Rookie of the Year award, the NBA announced. The Spurs’ young guard will be competing with 2024 draft No.1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher from the Hawks and second-rounder Jaylen Wells of the Memphis Grizzlies for the honor.

This rookie class wasn’t particularly impressive, but Castle stood out. He led all eligible rookies in points per game, made field goals and free throw attempts, and ranked fourth in assists. Castle was also a major rotation piece for a Spurs team that was fighting for a play-in spot until Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and ruled out for the season in February. After that, his role increased and so did his production, finishing out the season averaging 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists. He seems like the favorite to win the award, but the other two finalists have solid cases as well.
Risacher started 73 games for an Atlanta team that made the play-in and did a good job on a small-usage but key 3-and-D role for a veteran squad that exceeded expectations. Wells started 74 games for a Grizzlies team that made it to the play-in. He guarded the opposing team’s best perimeter player most nights and hit threes at a solid rate on significant volume. Both played smaller roles than Castle and had fewer eye-popping performances, but they are good choices. Philadelphia’s Jared McCain would have also been a contender if not for injuries.

Castle could become the second consecutive Spurs player to win Rookie of the Year after Victor Wembanyama was selected unanimously last season. Even if he doesn’t, he did more than enough as a rookie to prove his considerable upside, so the franchise is surely happy with their pick.
