Open Thread: A Spurs-eye view of the Pistons/Knicks series
The scrappiest match up of the first round is underway
Of the four games played on Saturday, the Knicks/Pistons is the one game I had pegged for a Game 1 upset. There’s nothing like a sold out disgruntled Madison Square Garden crowd. I also expect this to be the chippiest pairing in the Eastern Conference.
When the fourth quarter started with the Pistons in the lead, I was sure a nail-biter was in the works. But a five-second inbound baffled Detroit and Ausar Thompson whiffed a dunk with no one around, I had to recalibrate my expectations.
Looking at this series through Silver & Black glasses, the Detroit Pistons have no ties to the San Antonio Spurs
The Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau served as an assistant coach from 1993-1995 under Bob Hill. The 1994-1995 season is when Gregg Popovich returned to San Antonio as general manager and vice president of basketball operations.
This is the series where I am most split as I find both impressive and appreciate their individual rises.
Unfortunately with the talent currently pulsing throughout the NBA, the Knicks look to be the underdogs tear after year, this generation’s version of the Reggie Miller era Pacers.
Detroit still have moves to make, the biggest being thirty more regular season wins this year. Their rise from worst in the NBA to 6th in the Eastern Conference makes them the dark horse in the running this year.
In the end the Pistons unravelled underscoring just what a threat the Knicks have become in the East, but there was enough contentious nudging to reveal that this will be a series worth following.
Prediction: Knicks in 5.
Who am I rooting for: Knicks, but only if they are fueled by the frustration of the Pistons keeping them on their toes.
Reason: This series has all the makings of a brawl with multiple ejections.
How about you? Who you rooting for?
