Image

(Victor Wembanyama), C

(De’Aaron Fox), G

(Chris Paul), G

(Keldon Johson), F

(Devin Vassell), G

(Stephon Castle), G

(Harrison Barnes), F

(Jeremy Sochan), F

(Julian Champagnie), F

(Blake Wesley), G

(Malaki Branham), G

Image

(Sandro Mamukelashvili), F

(Charles Bassey), C

(Bismack Biyombo), C

(Jordan McLaughlin), G

Spurs’ roster breakdown: Who stays? Who goes?

With their top eight scorers under contract for next season, the Spurs don’t have an overwhelming amount of business to take care of when it comes to internal free agents. Still, there are decisions to be made across the roster. Here is a player-by-player analysis of the Spurs’ roster heading into the offseason, excluding three players on two-way contracts:

Image
San Antonio Spurs’ Devin Vassell, from left, Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox chat as they watch their teammates take on the Toronto Raptors in the Spurs’ last game of the season at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Victor Wembanyama, C

Age: 21

Contract: Two years, $30.25 million

Outlook: A bout of deep vein thrombosis cut short Wembanyama’s first All-Star season in February. He still finished with averages of 21.4 points, 11 rebounds and a league-high 2.8 blocks and would have been a shoo-in for Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA honors had he not been limited to 46 games. Assuming Wembanyama fully recovers from his blood clot issue – and the Spurs remain adamantly optimistic he will – the stratosphere remains the limit.

De’Aaron Fox, G

Age: 27

Contract: One year, $37.06 million

Outlook: The one-time All-Star arrived from Sacramento in a blockbuster February trade, and the Spurs loved what they saw in the woefully short five-game sample size he spent alongside Wembanyama. Fox underwent season-ending surgery on his injured left pinkie in March, and is eligible for a four-year, $229-million extension this summer. Expect the Spurs and Fox to reach a long-term agreement.

Chris Paul, G

Age: 39.

Contract: Free agent.

Outlook: The Spurs got their money’s worth from Paul after the 12-time All-Star signed a one-year, $10.5 million deal last July. Not only did Paul appear in and start all 82 games, he became a priceless mentor to most of the Spurs’ young roster – including rookie Stephon Castle. Set to turn 40 next month, Paul has indicated his desire to play a 21st NBA season. If he remains set on being a starter, however, it probably won’t be with the Spurs.

Keldon Johson, F

Age: 25

Contract: Two years, $35 million

Outlook: In his first full season coming off the bench, Johnson set a club record – once held by Hall of Famer Manu Ginobili – by totaling 979 reserve points. Having found his fit as a super-sub, Johnson showed how he could be a significant piece on the next playoff-contending iteration of the Spurs. His extremely tradeable contract, however, is apt to keep his name in trade rumors for the time being.

Devin Vassell, G

Age: 24

Contract: Four years, $102.7 million

Outlook: Robbed of a proper offseason after undergoing foot surgery last June, Vassell’s fifth NBA season never quite found its footing. He averaged 16.3 points and shot 36.8% from 3-point range, both numbers Vassell’s lowest since his sophomore campaign. The Spurs hope with a healthy offseason ahead, Vassell will be able to find his niche as a fourth option beside Wembanyama, Fox and Castle.

Stephon Castle, G

Age: 20

Contract: Three years, $32.25 million

Outlook: The former Connecticut Husky wasted little time proving the Spurs right for taking him fourth overall in last June’s draft, averaging 14.7 points and 4.1 assists while putting positioning himself to possibly become the club’s second consecutive Rookie of the Year winner. A bona fide two-way player, Castle is cemented as a part of the Spurs’ future core.

Harrison Barnes, F

Age: 32

Contract: One year, $19 million

Outlook: The Spurs acquired Barnes from Sacramento last summer for practically nothing, absorbing the veteran forward plus a 2031 first-round pick swap to help facilitate the Kings’ deal with Chicago for DeMar DeRozan. Barnes paid off every way imaginable, on the floor and in the locker room. He played and started in 82 games for the third consecutive season, and set career highs in 3-point percentage (43.3%) and total 3-pointers made (156). Expect Barnes back in his usual spot in the Spurs’ starting lineup next season.

Jeremy Sochan, F

Age: 21

Contract: One year, $7.95 million

Outlook: Sochan began last season as the Spurs’ starting point guard and ended this season as a starting forward-slash-backup center. In between, the Spurs might have discovered the best role for him as a high-energy, defensively versatile, offense-optional reserve piece. Sochan is eligible for an extension this summer and just might get it.

Julian Champagnie, F

Age: 23

Contract: Two years, $6 million

Outlook: Champagnie remains one of the Spurs’ more intriguing diamond-in-the-rough finds, having been claimed off waivers from Philadelphia in February 2023. In his second full season with the Spurs, Champagnie found his niche as a bench shooter, making a team-best 178 3-pointers. Champagnie’s deal for next season does not become guaranteed until Aug. 1, but comes at a price tag the Spurs will have no issue picking up.

Blake Wesley, G

Age: 21

Contract: One year, $4.7 million

Outlook: Of the two guards the Spurs selected in the bottom third of the first round of the 2022 draft, Wesley seems to have found his role more than Malaki Branham. That is not to say Wesley’s place on next season’s roster is safe. Wesley has demonstrated himself to be a dogged defender and lightning-quick penetrator. Anything involving putting the ball in the basket, however, remains an adventure. With new blood set to arrive this summer in the form of two more first-round picks, players like Wesley and Branham could get caught in a roster crunch despite guaranteed money.

Malaki Branham, G

Age: 21

Contract: One year, $4.96 million

Outlook: Branham’s development stalled in his third NBA season, as he appeared in 47 games and – for the first time in his career – started none. By March, Branham wound up in the G League for a game just to garner some minutes. Like Wesley, Branham remains under contract next season but the Spurs should have little trouble trading or waiving their salaries to create roster room if needed.

San Antonio Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili (54) hypes up his teammate San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) as the team goes into a timeout during the first half against the Toronto Raptors at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Sandro Mamukelashvili, F

Age: 25

Contract: Free agent

Outlook: The affable “Mamu” might never emerge as an NBA star or even an every-night rotation player, but the team-oriented big man from the Republic of Georgia is the perfect type of player for the end of the bench. He can occasionally come in and plug some holes, hit a 3-pointer and not complain when he takes a string of DNPs. The Spurs would probably take Mamukelashvili back at last season’s price tag ($2.1 million), though he would be a max player if Flavor Flav was the team’s general manager.

Charles Bassey, C

Age: 24

Contract: Free agent

Outlook: It was a second consecutive lost season for Bassey, who a year removed from an ACL tear was limited to 36 games due to a variety of other ailments. With the Spurs almost certainly looking to upgrade the center position behind Wembanyama this summer, Bassey’s time with the team could be over.

Bismack Biyombo, C

Age: 32

Contract: Free agent

Outlook: Biyombo signed a 10-day deal in February to help with depth behind Wembanyama, then ended up starting 26 games after the star Frenchman was lost for the season. Biyombo did not earn an NBA deal when he was a free agent last summer so unless the Spurs opt to bring him back on a veteran contract, his career might be done.

Jordan McLaughlin, G

Age: 29

Contract: Free agent

Outlook: A throw-in from Sacramento in the Fox trade, McLaughlin was limited to 18 garbage-time appearances with the Spurs. He is unlikely to be back.
