NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors

Harrison Barnes’ buzzer-beating three caps off a wild 114-111 win in Golden State

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors

Barnesy turned back the clock and pulled off his best MJ impression to win it at the buzzer for the Spurs.

Following a close five-point loss to the Clippers on Tuesday night, the Spurs played one of their most entertaining games less than 24h later as they won in Golden State off of a buzzer-beating three from Harrison Barnes.

The game couldn’t start any worse for San Antonio. Golden State jumped out to an 11-0 lead while the Spurs missed their first five shots, including four from long-range. It took them five minutes to get on the board, and San Antonio managed to get back in the game by going on an 8-0 run of their own. Unfortunately, the Warriors continued to score at will by running their motion offense, as they easily carved up the Spurs’ defense to rebuild a double-digit lead.

Everything changed in the second. The floodgates suddenly opened for the Spurs from deep, as Barnes hit a couple of treys from the corner — perhaps a sign of things to come. Stephon Castle and Chris Paul upped their aggressiveness, too, as the rookie ferociously attacked the rim while the veteran carved up Golden State through his passing. As a result, the visiting team grabbed their first lead early in the quarter and maintained it into halftime, punctuated by a Castle alley-oop that put them up four.

The Warriors, though, then turned back the clock and registered one of their patented third quarters. Steph took over by hitting threes from far beyond the line, including his 300th of the season — a feat he’s now done a mindboggling six times. With the Spurs selling out to guard him, Golden State was able to take advantage of open lanes to the basket, resulting in them outscoring San Antonio 37-21 in the quarter, with 14 coming from just Steph.

Down by a dozen going into the fourth, the Spurs were in trouble, but the team refused to give up. Led by Keldon Johnson off the bench, San Antonio slowly chipped at the Warriors’ lead until they regained the advantage with minutes to go. The defense came up huge by generating turnovers that turned into fast-break points, and the Spurs were up by 2 when Draymond got fouled. After going 2/2 and tying the game, San Antonio still had a final chance as they inbounded the ball from the sidelines, resulting in Harrison “Michael Jordan” Barnes rising like His Airness to hit one of the most surprising buzzer-beating threes you will EVER see. That certainly wasn’t on my bingo card for the night, but I’m not complaining as the Spurs eeked out a 114-111 victory in Golden State in one of the most entertaining games of the season.

Game notes

  • Devin Vassell struggled for the second consecutive night. He finished with 11 points on just 4-11 shooting, including 3-9 from deep, and has a total of 19 points in two games by going 7-19 from the field. While the shooting is concerning, Vassell’s lack of aggressiveness is what’s most troubling. He settled multiple times and barely attacked the rim, and Vassell didn’t contribute greatly in other facets of the game, either. Given that he’ll likely be third/fourth in touches when the team is healthy, Vassell needs to find ways to be useful without leading the team in shots.
  • Castle finished with 21 points and five assists on 8-15 shooting and 1-5 from three. He played great defense on (the other) Steph at the end of the game by sticking to the Warriors legend like glue, and managed to force a turnover that resulted in fast-break points for the Spurs. The rookie continues to show his poise and should be the frontrunner for ROTY.
  • Who needs Wemby when you’ve got Harrison Barnes??? The veteran wing went a nice 6-9 from the field and from three (yes, his shots were all from three) in this game and has gone a combined 12-17 from deep in the past two games combined. I also just realized that he’s still 32 — maybe we should be building around him instead.

Play of the game

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO, IT’S HARRISON FREAKIN’ BARNES!!!

Next game: at Phoenix on Friday

The Spurs will look to continue their momentum on Friday against a sad Suns team that just lost their eighth consecutive game.
