3 takeaways as the Spurs are eliminated from play-in contention

PORTLAND, Ore. – Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson wasn’t going to play the “what if” game after the Spurs were eliminated from play-in contention Sunday.
Stephon Castle scored 22 points and Devin Vassell had 21, but the Spurs fell 120-109 to the Trail Blazers to officially extend their playoff drought to a franchise-high six season.
Would things have been different had they not lost Victor Wembanyama to a blood clot in his right shoulder Feb. 20 and then De’Aaron Fox to finger surgery last month?
"It’s pointless just because everybody has a ‘what if,’ " Johnson said. “What’s real is we are trying to continue to build, improve and evolve, and that is what we’ve been doing for years here. And that’s for the next game (Tuesday) in L.A. (against the Clippers), and that’s going to translate into next year and moving forward.”
Both the Spurs (32-46) and the Blazers (35-44) were mathematically alive for a play-in spot going into the game. Either team would have been eliminated either by a loss or a win by Sacramento over Cleveland, and, as it turned out, the Kings upset the Cavaliers 120-113 to remain in position for a play-in spot.
On a positive note, the Spurs stayed ahead of the Blazers in the race for the NBA’s eighth-worst record. The club owning the ninth-worst record will have a 4.5% chance of landing the No. 1 pick in June’s draft and a 20.2% chance of vaulting into the top four. The No. 8 team will have a 6.0% chance of landing the top pick and a 26.2% chance of leaping into the top four.
The Spurs trailed trailed 33-18 after the first quarter and by 17 points in both the second and third periods, but Portland had to hold off a late rally to gain its only win in four games against San Antonio this season.
Chris Paul’s layup and free throw pulled the Spurs within 108-106 with 2 minutes left, but Portland answered by scoring four points in a 3-second span on Toumani Camara’s 3-pointer and a cutting layup by Kris Murray after Matisse Thybulle stole Devin Vassell’s inbounds pass.
Rather than focus on what the Spurs did wrong late, Johnson pointed to their shortcomings in the first quarter.
“I thought early on there were some things we could have controlled or participated more in and we didn’t. That’s frustrating,” he said.
Camara’s 23 points led the Blazers, who played without Scoot Henderson (concussion), Deni Avdija (thumb) and Anfernee Simons (forearm). Shaedon Sharpe finished with 21 points and Dalano Banton had 20.
Harrison Barnes and Malaki Branham each had 17 for the Spurs, who were without Jeremy Sochan (back) for a fourth straight game. Branham, who has been out of the rotation most of the season for defensive reasons, also had four rebounds and two assists.
“Just staying ready,” Branham said. “I think that’s the biggest thing that comes with this year for me, just staying ready. You never know what’s going to happen, so I was able to go out there and do what I know how to do and help the team go on some runs.”
Here are three takeaways from the first game of a four-game road trip for the Spurs, who fell to 13-25 away from the Frost Bank Center this season:
1. Castle’s confidence continues to soar.
With 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Castle recorded his fourth game in a row with at least 15 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Wembanyama is the only other rookie in franchise history with four straight games of 15/5/5.
Castle credited his outstanding all-around play of late, which included two near triple-doubles, to becoming more comfortable with the NBA game.
“I try not to over-think things,” he said. “It is hard as a rookie to not (do that), but right now I’m really just flowing, trying to let the game come to me, trusting my teammates more than anything and getting confidence from their trust in me as well.”
As far as the Rookie of the Year race goes, Castle said he believes he “pretty much” has got it “locked up.”
“I’m not really thinking about it when I’m in the game, but but just game by game, I feel like I’m more confident enough to be able to say that,” he said.
2. Barnes’ iron man milestone proof he learned from his elders.
Sunday’s game marked Barnes’ 300th in a row – the longest iron man streak of his career and the second-longest active run behind the New York Knicks’ Mikal Bridges (555).
“I try to do the things necessary to always make myself available to my teammates,” he said. “I think that’s the highest level of giving that you can do,” Barnes said.
Said Johnson, “In those games, (it would be wrong) to think that he didn’t have stuff going on at some point physically, mentally, in his own personal world, whatever it may be, but he yet he shows up and clocks in for work. It is commendable and also just invaluable for our (younger) guys to see and be around it.”
Barnes, 32, said all he is doing is trying to emulate the players he admired growing up or that he faced in his early days in the NBA."
“When you look at players like MJ (Michael Jordan) and the availability that he had, just always playing … Kobe (Bryant) as well,” Barnes said. “Just the level that they took care of their bodies and they trained, I think is admirable.”
3. Spurs miss Cissoko and vice versa.
Sidy Cissoko didn’t leave San Antonio empty handed when the Spurs traded him on Feb. 3 to Sacramento as part of the blockbuster three-team De’Aaron Fox trade.
In the Blazers locker room before the game, the affable 21-year-old French forward proudly showed a visitor from San Antonio a scrapbook the Spurs gave him before he left town.
“Here is a picture of me day one on the job,” he said. “I almost cried seeing that…Please say hi to everybody there, all the staff. They are great people.”
The emotion Cissoko displayed while showing off the scrapbook underscored a difficult aspect of pro sports.
“It’s the worst part of the business,” Johnson said of trading well-liked players.
The Spurs grew fond of Cissoko after drafting him in the second round in 2023, but they had to say goodbye to the raw prospect to get the trade done that brought the explosive Fox to San Antonio from Sacramento.
“He put in a lot of work and trusted our development program,” Johnson said of Sissoko. “He was always upbeat and positive and ready to go to work – in Austin as well as San Antonio. I’m happy he’s having another opportunity somewhere else to continue his path to becoming a great NBA player.”
Cissoko played in 12 games for the Spurs as a rookie and 17 this season.
“His body has always been intriguing,” Johnson said. “He’s been athletic, can move. He’s always been defensive-minded. And then offensively, he has a versatile skill-set in terms of dribbling, passing, and his shooting has come a long way.”
Cissoko was active Sunday after a long stretch on the sidelines due to an ankle injury. He signed a two-way contract with Portland on Feb. 8, two days after he was waived by Washington, which acquired him on Feb. 6 in a trade with Sacramento.
“It definitely brings some sadness, but it is good,” he said of seeing the Spurs again. "The NBA is a business, at the end of the day, and you got to keep your head up, keep your head strong. It’s like Pop told me before leaving. He told me, ‘It is never goodbye, it is always see you soon.’ Pop and Brian Wright told me that, ‘Once a Spur, always a Spur.’ "
