Spurs make mad comeback attempt but fall short at the buzzer against the Cavaliers

Cleveland Cavaliers v San Antonio Spurs

After getting down by 23 to red hot Cavs team, the Spurs came up an inch short (or long?) from a big upset.

After a big win in Denver in a battle of short-handed teams, the San Antonio Spurs returned home for their penultimate home game of the season looking to upset another championship contender in the Cleveland Cavaliers, who just needed one more win to clinch the top seed in the East. After a rough first half in which the Cavs couldn’t miss from three and the Spurs were down by as much as 23, they came roaring back into he second half before going on a huge run in the final minutes with a chance to steal a win at the buzzer. Unfortunately, they came up just an inch short.

Evan Mobley, who missed last week’s match-up for rest, was a problem early with 11 of Cleveland’s first 14 points and 18 points in the quarter on 4-5 shooting from three. Overall, the Cavs hit their first five threes to get out to 20-13 lead after just four minutes, while Harrison Barnes and Stephon Castle were the Spurs’ main source of offense early. They tried to keep up with a decent shooting quarter themselves, but the Cavs remained red hot. By the two-minute mark, they had hit 10-13 threes and were up 38-28 after 12 minutes.

The Cavs bench started regressing to the mean from three in the second quarter, but the Spurs just couldn’t get out of their own way. A few transition turnovers had them down 52-37 midway through the quarter, and as Cleveland’s starters came back in, they picked the shooting back up, hitting 15-30 threes in the half compared to just 6-21 for the Spurs. The Cavs lead got as high as 23 at 62-39 with 2:39 left before the Spurs, led by Castle and Devin Vassell, finally got out in transition and got some shots to fall, closing on an 11-5 run that doesn’t sound huge on its own, but it ended up being important as it gave the Spurs hope with a 67-50 deficit feeling much more manageable.

The hot close to the first half carried over to the third quarter for the Spurs offense as they hit three quick threes and upped their defensive effort to chip away at the lead. They outscored the Cavs 19-12 in the opening half of the quarter to cut the lead to 10 at 79-69. Their second unit was more awake than it had been in the entire first half, and a couple of Julian Champagine threes cut the deficit to six at 88-82 before the Cavs scored the final three points of the quarter for a 91-82 lead.

Cleveland immediately woke back up from three, hitting their first 3 threes of the fourth quarter while the Spurs’ offense temporarily fell apart, so much so that Castle even missed a wide open dunk in transition and threw away a couple of turnovers. The Spurs wasted several chances at the rim but remained resolute, once again chipping away at a Cavs lead that had gotten back up to as much as 16. The lead was back down to 10, 107-97, on a Champagnie dunk with 4:40 left, and an angry Chris Paul, who felt slighted by the refs, helped trigger a 14-2 run, capped by two Barnes threes to get them within one, 113-114 with 28 seconds left.

The Spurs forced a Cavs shot lock violation with 4.6 left, and they had their first chance to tie or take the lead since the score was 3-3 early in the first quarter. Unfortunately, a Barnes floater after a nice spin-move on DeAndre Hunter bounced off the back iron at the buzzer for a heartbreaking loss despite the resilient comeback effort.

Game Notes

  • This was the second game in a row that Castle missed a triple-double by just one stat. After finishing the Denver game with 15-15-9 (albeit in 6-18 shooting), he had a much more efficient 22 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists on 8-16 shooting (1-6 from three). He still had a few rough moments with that aforementioned missed dunk and three turnovers, but he still had a good game and has to have ROY in the bag at this point.
  • Devin Vassell also had a big night with 24 points on 9-18 shooting, including 6 threes, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. There was hardly ever any point when he was the hottest man on the court, but instead he was just steady all night and ready when the ball found him. That is what the Spurs will need from him in the future when he will rarely be the first option on the court.
  • In an attempt to find some size in the second quarter, Mitch Johnson gave Charles Bassey a quick look, and he was predictably rusty. In just three minutes of action, he had two quick fouls, slowed down in transition to miss an outlet pass off a steal despite being wide, and he missed an alley-oop dunk, lacking his usual lift. It’s getting harder to imagine him returning this off-season, which would be a shame considering how much injuries have derailed his career here.
  • This was not a good Blake Wesley game. He was 0-7 from the field for 2 points, and in a Shaqtin’-a-Fool worthy sequence, he missed two wide-open, point-blank layups on one possession, followed by losing the ball on an attempted behind-the-back dribble in transition that Donovan Mitchell nearly converted into a buzzer-beating three from the logo at the end of the third quarter.
  • Speaking to Marc Spears, Chris Paul said he still feels like he can play another season, wherever that may be, but it will require discussions with his family. I would be for him returning to the Spurs if he doesn’t retire, but as great as he has been for them this season, I do feel he would need to be willing to come off the bench, especially if the Spurs are ready to start Castle at point guard.

Play of the Game

It would have been Barnes’ buzzer beater had he hit that floater, but we’ll still give it to him for the back-to-back threes that even put them in position to go for the win in the first place.

Up next: Sunday at Portland Trail Blazers

It may be a good thing the results don’t matter to the Spurs right now, because the scheduling gods have been cruel since January. They head out on a four-game road trip out West before their season finale back home in 9 days. Tip-off in Portland will be at 5:00 PM CT on FanDuel Sports.
