他有很多著名的口头禅,多年来一直深受马刺球迷的喜爱,比如布鲁斯·鲍文(Bruce Bowen)投中底角三分时说的“His spot, his shot”,或者马努打出精彩表现时说的“That is why you do the voodoo that you do!”。

Longtime voice of Spurs radio Bill Schoening announces retirement
Another Spurs media legend is calling it quits after an extraordinary career.
Longtime radio voice for the San Antonio Spurs, Bill Schoening, has announced his retirement at the end of the 2024-25 season. Schoening has been the ultimate iron man for the Spurs, having never missed a game in 24 seasons and, barring unforeseen circumstances, will be calling his 2,280th consecutive game for the Spurs in their (presumed) season finale against the Toronto Raptors on April 13th. (They technically aren’t eliminated from the play-in yet, but they’re four games behind with six games left.)
Per the Spurs’ official press release:
A native of Philadelphia, Schoening’s broadcasting career spans more than four decades. Before joining the Spurs, he spent 12 years as the radio play-by-play announcer for the University of Texas, calling football, basketball and baseball games. His resume includes calling games from iconic venues such as Lambeau Field, Yankee Stadium and the Rose Bowl. Over the years, he has also voiced broadcasts for the NFL, MLB and arena football.
“It’s difficult to walk away from a job that has provided so many fond memories and spawned many meaningful relationships, but it’s time for me step away from full time broadcasting and pursue some other interests like mentorship, volunteer work and time with family,” said Bill. “I’m thankful for my 24 seasons spent with the Spurs, calling four championships and being on hand for every game the Big Three played together. It has been an honor to describe the Spurs brand of selfless basketball, and I’ll never forget their consistent pursuit of excellence.”
As a result of his success in broadcasting, Schoening is a four-time recipient of the Associated Press “Top Texas Play-by-Play Award” and was named Texas Sportscaster of the Year in 2014. His contributions to the industry were further recognized in 2022 when he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
“Bill’s voice has been the soundtrack to so many incredible Spurs milestones,” said Mike Kickirillo, Senior Director of Broadcasting for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “His passion, professionalism and storytelling ability have made him a beloved figure in the Spurs community over his 2,280 consecutive games, never missing a moment. While we’ll miss his presence on the air, his legacy will always be a part of our franchise’s history.”
Schoening was the radio announcer for four of the Spurs’ five championship. He covered every game of the Big Three era featuring Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, the first two seasons of Victor Wembanyama, and everything in between. He had plenty of famous sayings that stuck with the Spurs fans over the years, such as “His spot, his shot,” when Bruce Bowen hit a corner three, or “That is why you do the voodoo that you do!” when Manu I had a big play.
I have plenty of fond memories of listening to Schoening over the years, whether it was in the car or searching for the signal for 1200 AM while I was at Texas A&M University, which is riiiight on the edge of its reach at about 170 mi from San Antonio, before League Pass was a thing. (At least the Spurs were nationally televised more back then.)
Schoening will certainly be difficult to replace, and it especially makes it difficult to guess who his replacement could be since he has never needed a substitute. The only name off the top of my own head would be former Spurs broadcaster Andrew Monaco, who is currently the sports radio voice for Texas A&M (hence why he’s still in my head). The Spurs could also go young, as they did when they hired Jacob Tobey to replace longtime television play-by-play announcer Bill Land when he retired after last season.
Regardless, that is a topic for another day. In the meantime, thank you to Bill for 24 years of amazing service to Spurs fans! You will certainly be missed, but your voice will live on forever in Spurs lore. Be sure to go check out Jeff McDonald’s excellent farewell to Schoening at the San Antonio Express News, and tell us about some of your favorite Shoening sayings, calls or moments in the comments below!
Cheers to 24 years
