Austin Spurs’ Scott King claims G League coach of year award

Austin’s Scott King has been named G League coach of the year after leading the Spurs’ developmental squad to its first playoff appearance since 2021.

Scott is the second coach in Austin Spurs history to win the award. Quin Snyder, now coaching the Atlanta Hawks, earned the 2008-2009 honor with the Austin Toros.

In his first season with Austin, King led the team to the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference after it finished 22-12 and tied with the Stockton Kings for the conference’s best record.

The Austin Spurs will face the Salt Lake City Stars in the Western Conference semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. It’s the Austin Spurs’ first appearance in the second round since 2018, when they won the NBA G League championship.

Austin ended the regular season ranked first in defensive rating (102.3), third in steals per game (10.1) and fourth in both blocks (6.6) and rebounds (48.4).

The Spurs’ farm team also set a league record this season for highest margin of victory (+23.5).

Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised King last week for guiding Austin to the playoffs despite having a roster in a near constant state of flux due to injuries and other circumstances.

The Spurs hired King last August after he spent five seasons with New York. He was the Knicks’ assistant director of player development when he agreed to become the 10th head coach in Austin Spurs history.

“They’ve had about as inconsistent of a roster availability and set of circumstances almost as us, and they just have kind of stayed true and rode it all out,” Johnson said. “It’s a great testament to (King) and to their staff and to their roster, and I’m really happy for them.”
