As the horn sounded at the end of the third quarter Tuesday, Orlando forward Franz Wagner remained on the Frost Bank Center floor, felled by an errant elbow from the Spurs’ Stephon Castle.

Wagner eventually got off up the proverbial mat. So too did the Magic.

Boosted by a big fourth quarter from Paolo Banchero and three 3-pointers in the frame from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Orlando rallied from a double-digit deficit to win going away, 116-105.

“It’s a tough one, because for three quarters you feel you played really, really well,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “The fourth quarter leaves you feeling pretty bad, though, and down.”

The loss was a season-high fifth in a row for the Spurs, who led by 11 points with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter. Orlando cut that to 84-79 heading into the fourth, then took control for good with an 18-4 run in the middle part of the final period.

Banchero and Wagner, the Magic’s pair of 6-foot-10 wings, each scored 24 points while Pope chipped in 23. Orlando outscored the Spurs 37-21 in the fourth quarter to transform a double-digit deficit into a double-digit victory.

”They ramped up their defense in the fourth quarter, played a little harder, made it a little tougher for us,” Spurs forward Julian Champagnie said. “I’ll give them that.”

Said Johnson: “You could feel them ramping up the pressure and trying to be more physical. Give them credit for that.”

Harrison Barnes led the Spurs with 24 points, while Champagnie threw in 19 off the bench including five 3-pointers.

It wasn’t enough to end the skid for the Spurs, who will next look to halt it on the second night of a difficult back-to-back Wednesday at Denver.

Tuesday’s loss dropped the Spurs to 31-44.

Sochan’s injury put Spurs in a bind

The Spurs entered the day knowing they would be without 6-10 backup center Charles Bassey, who is on an injury management plan due to a lengthy layoff from a bone bruise in his left knee.

Shortly before tipoff, they learned they would also be without Jeremy Sochan, who is 6-8 but happens to be the team’s starting center for now. He showed up on the injury report with a bad back.

That lack of size proved bad news against the Magic, who don’t lack it at all.

The Spurs hung in in the rebounding department, losing that battle only 41-38. They also won points in the paint, 46-36.

Second-chance points, however, doomed them. Orlando outscored the Spurs in that area 21-4, which was too much to overcome.

The Spurs did get a professional effort from veteran Bismack Biyombo, who started in Sochan’s spot after not playing at all in the two previous losses against Boston and Golden State.

Biyombo at least gave his team a fighting chance against the Magic’s army of 6-10 behemoths. He finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

No time to celebrate Castle’s latest honor

Earlier in the day, Castle became the fourth player in Spurs history to be named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month multiple times.

Castle, who also earned that bauble in January, joins a list that includes David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Victor Wembanyama.

The fourth pick in last June’s draft, Castle in March averaged a rookie-best 19.5 points to accompany 4.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists. He scored in double figures 15 times, including nine games with at least 20 points.

After Tuesday’s defeat, however, Castle was not keen to ponder his place in Spurs’ rookie annals.

“I really wasn’t thinking about that coming into the game,” Castle said. “I know their team really didn’t care about that at all, so it wasn’t really on my mind.”

Castle’s first game in April but productive enough, but not his best.

He finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but also accounted for seven of the Spurs’ 17 turnovers.

Though Castle’s monthly award was well-deserved, Johnson agreed it was difficult to fully commemorate it after a difficult loss.

“A lot of times, the game and the team overshadows that stuff,” Johnson said. “He had a great month and he’ll definitely get honored and acknowledged, but there’s definitely some frustration in that locker room because they wanted to get that W.”

A Wemby (non) update

Victor Wembanyama remained away from the team and away from the Frost Bank Center on Tuesday while undergoing treatment for the deep vein thrombosis that ended his season Feb. 20.

Late last month, French national team coach Frederic Fauthoux told reporters in that country the 7-foot-3 All-Star had recently undergone surgery to address the issue in his right shoulder. The Spurs have not confirmed that report.

Pressed for an additional update on Wembanyama on Tuesday, Johnson kept to the same company line.

“He’s doing very well,” Johnson said. “I think he would have wanted to be on the court to block some shots and make some buckets for us tonight for sure. Everything is going well, but we’ll keep it all in house.”

In the same March interview, Fauthoux told French reporters he was optimistic Wembanyama would be healed in time to joing Les Bleus for the EuroBasket tournament in August.

Asked by a French reporter in San Antonio on Tuesday if that seemed a reasonable timeline for Wembanyama’s recovery, Johnson demurred.

“I wish I had a crystal ball,” Johnson said. “I’m sure he’d want to play tomorrow against (Nikola) Jokic and Denver. Again, we’ll do what’s best for him. I’m sure he’ll push the envelope as much as he can and we’ll make the best decision with him and his people and everyone involved.”
