Castle honored as West rookie of month for second time

The NBA on Tuesday named Stephon Castle its Western Conference Rookie of the Month for March, placing him in some elite company in Spurs history.

Castle also earned the honor for January. David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Victor Wembanyama are the only other players in franchise history to win the award multiple times.

In 17 games last month, including 10 starts, Castle averaged a rookie-best 19.5 points to go along with 4.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 28.8 minutes. He scored in double figures 15 times, including nine outings with 20 or more.

Castle was the only rookie in March to make 100-plus field goals (118). His 70 free throws made topped the rookie chart and he finished second in assists with 81.

From March 14-29, the fourth overall pick had a streak of nine games with at least 15 points, making him just the sixth Spurs rookie with such a run.

Castle was at his best in the month against three of the NBA’s top defenses, averaging 25.5 points, 6.3 assists and 6.3 rebounds against Oklahoma City (when he had a season-high 32 points), Cleveland (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Boston (22 points and eight assists).

“I feel like he’s already a special talent, but the sky’s the limit for Steph,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said. “I feel like the game is already slowing down for him, but once he keeps growing - and he works his ass off - he’s going to be great.”
