Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Cleveland Cavaliers
The Spurs face the steamrolling Cavaliers for the first time this season
The Cleveland Cavaliers have done nothing but win this season, but much like the Oklahoma City Thunder out West, it hasn’t garnered them the respect that many feel should come with a 58-14 record. Seven different players average in double figures for them, a major factor that has made them the NBA’s most efficient offense this season, while they also have a top 10 defense anchored by their own version of the Twin Towers. It’s a combination that very recently led them to a franchise-record 16 straight wins and has them sitting relatively comfortably atop of the East. If given the choice though, most would be hard pressed to pick them over the defending champion Boston Celtics.
Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs came crashing down to Earth after a surprise 3-game win streak of their own, saddled with key injuries as they are. Cleveland presents a serious test that San Antonio is simply not prepared for. The Cavaliers suffered a 4 game losing streak following their aforementioned win streak, but all of those losses came against teams that are significantly healthier than the Spurs.

What to watch for
- Donovan Mitchell’s scoring numbers may be down in his 3rd season with the Cavaliers, but he still leads them in points per game, usage, and is undoubtedly their go-to player in crunch time. A 6’3 combo guard, Mitchell can score at all 3 levels, is very good at getting to the foul line, and is a willing passer (4.8 assists per game) He missed Cleveland’s last game with a groin injury, but appears set to play tonight against San Antonio.
- Darius Garland is teamed up with Mitchell in the backcourt, bringing more of what Mitchell brings to the table. At 6’1 he’s smaller than Mitchell and doesn’t get to the line like he does. Both players offensive game rely heavily on their jump shots, but Garland is a more efficient shooter on a similar number of attempts.
- With Evan Mobley sitting out tonight for rest purposes, Cleveland will only have one of their dual bigs in the starting line-up tonight against the Spurs. Center Jarrett Allen plays more in a traditional center role compared to, with the bulk of his scoring coming at the rim in comparison to Mobley, who likes to step out beyond the 3-point line. On defense he’s best at guarding the rim, but thanks to his great mobility he can switch on to perimeter players when put in that situation.
- Devin Vassell has broken the 20-point mark in 6 of his last 10 games, including each of the last 3. Vassell has taken no free throws in both of San Antonio’s previous two games. A good string of performances to finish the year out could be exactly what Vassell needs heading into the offseason after what has been a down year.
- After starting 2 games, Jeremy Sochan has come off the bench in both of San Antonio’s most recent games. Could a role off the bench be his main deployment going forward?
