Branham determined to ‘stay ready’ while riding bench
San Antonio Spurs guard Blake Wesley (14) and guard Malaki Branham (22) react as they watch their teammates take on the Memphis Grizzlies at Frost Bank Center on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs fell to the Grizzles, 129-115.
CLEVELAND – Spurs guard Malaki Branham isn’t playing much these days, but he’s determined to stay sharp in case that changes suddenly.
With that goal in mind, he’s worked out some at UTSA on his free time in addition to completing a short, recent stint in the G League with the Austin Spurs.
“I’m just trying to stay ready, man, trying to stay ready,” he said after logging five minutes late in the Spurs’ 122-96 blowout loss at Detroit on Tuesday night.
Branham has been out of acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation since late November. He’s under contract through 2025-26 when he’s scheduled to pocket $4.9 million after earning $3.2 million this season.
A third-year player after the Spurs selected him 20th overall in 2022 following his one season at Ohio State, Branham, 21, wants to stay sharp in the hope things will turn around for him next season.
“I’ve been hearing stories that a lot of guys when they don’t play, they get into bad habits, so I’m trying to keep positive, trying to just stay sharp,” he said. “I feel like I’m doing that.”
As season winds down, shootarounds wane
The Spurs had a shootaround Tuesday morning in Detroit after going through several days without holding one.
Often with the goal in mind of getting the players some rest, Johnson has had them go through “some small group stuff” rather than hold a full-scale shootaround.
“It’s that time of the year where things can get a little mundane, so we’ve been in the gym but there’s also been some times where we’ve held maybe one or two guys out just because of bumps and bruises,” Johnson said. “But we still want to get the majority of the guys in. So it’s tough sometimes to have full shootaround. So, we’ve been trying to be creative and mindful about how we’re doing it.”
Forward Julian Champagnie said when it comes to shootarounds, he “can take it or leave it.”
“It is kind of one of those things where it’s like, all right, I’m in,” he said. “But it’s definitely important to come in here and focus on the minor details we got to focus on.”
