San Antonio Spurs partner is working with Elon Musk’s DOGE
A partner in the San Antonio Spurs is working with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, the unofficial agency that is spearheading mass layoffs of federal employees and deep spending cuts for the Trump administration.
Joe Gebbia is the billionaire co-founder of Airbnb and is described as a close friend of Musk’s. He is a board member of Tesla Inc., where Musk is CEO.
Gebbia joined the Spurs investor group as a “strategic partner" in January 2022, the NBA franchise said at the time. Last week, he accompanied Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to watch the Austin Spurs, a Spurs-owned team that plays in the NBA’s developmental league.
A longtime Democrat and major donor to the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020, Gebbia revealed in January that he had experienced a political reawakening and had voted for Donald Trump in November.
I have a confession to make:
I did a bad thing.
Something the younger me
Would hate myself for doing.
Something that only a few people (and maybe Bytedance) know:
I voted Republican last November.
I know, I know
I can hear the crush of disappointed voices: Say it ain’t so,…— Joe Gebbia (@ jgebbia) January 19, 2025
Gebbia’s political turnabout and his involvement in Musk’s DOGE prompted some Airbnb hosts and guests to threaten to abandon the online rental marketplace.
Gebbia, 43, an Austin resident, no longer has an operating role with Airbnb but remains on its board and is a major shareholder. He also is chairman of the nonprofit Airbnb.org, which provides temporary lodging to refugees, asylum seekers and victims of natural disasters.
Airbnb has sought to distance itself from Gebbia’s politics, saying that he is working with DOGE “in his personal capacity” and that his views don’t reflect those of Airbnb or Airbnb.org.
Spurs Sport & Entertainment, which owns the Spurs, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Gebbia announced last month on X, the social media platform owned by Musk, that he would volunteer with DOGE and would focus on modernizing the paper-based retirement system for federal employees.

“Excited to share I’m bringing my designer brain and start-up spirit into the government,” Gebbia said in the Feb. 27 post.
“My first project at DOGE is improving the slow and paper-based retirement process. Since leaving my operating role at Airbnb in 2022, I’ve been looking for the next digital design challenge. And I can think of few more important ones than volunteering to improve the user experience within our government.
“If anyone else in good standing wants to help design beautiful, user-friendly digital products, reach out,” Gebbia wrote.
Musk, like Gebbia, is a tech entrepreneur who was once associated with progressive causes but later took a hard turn to the right. Musk, whose many business enterprises include SpaceX, contributed $277 million to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, making him the largest donor to either party during the election cycle.
Musk’s cost-cutting moves as head of DOGE have proved profoundly polarizing, sparking protests and acts of vandalism at Tesla dealerships across the U.S. and in Europe.
At DOGE’s direction, federal agencies have laid off tens of thousands of probationary employees, canceled grants and shut down programs. Musk’s team has all but dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development, the prime vehicle for American humanitarian aid. Federal courts have blocked some of Musk’s actions, at least temporarily.
Gebbia’s connection with DOGE sparked a backlash among some Airbnb hosts and renters, who expressed dismay on the company’s Community Center message board.
“I am extremely disturbed hearing about Joe Gebbia joining Musk’s DOGE. So many people are contacting me saying they won’t stay in an Airbnb again! PLEASE remove him from the Board,” wrote one commenter.
“We are Airbnb hosts of 7 years standing and rely heavily on bookings through this platform,” said another user. "However, I cannot be part of an organisation that supports, through its board associations, what is rapidly making itself known as a fascist regime. I am researching alternative booking platforms — any suggestions?
Gebbia contributed more than $200,000 to Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and a like amount to Biden’s successful 2020 campaign, the New York Times reported. He donated $20,000 in 2023 to Biden’s re-election effort.
On Jan. 19, the day before Trump was sworn in to a second term as president, Gebbia disclosed in a lengthy post on X that he had ditched his Democratic sympathies and voted for Trump.
Addressing his “younger self” to explain his change of heart, Gebbia wrote that “those Democrats you’ve voted for your whole life aren’t the same party they used to be. Like your fashion sense, they’ve lost their way. Hopefully they’ll make an effort to win people like me back.
“We were told by the media that loving this country meant hating Trump, and for many years I believed that,” Gebbia wrote. “Until I … did my own research.”
He said he had come to realize that Trump is a patriot who “deeply cares” about public safety, government efficiency, secure borders and “bringing common sense back to our country.”
“Together, we can make this nation great again, from the Gulf of America in the South all the way to the great state of Greenland in the North,” Gebbia concluded.
Gebbia’s net worth is nearly $9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His fortune is derived from his shares in Airbnb, which he co-founded in 2008.
Gebbia’s newfound conservatism stands in contrast to the political views of longtime Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, the public face of the franchise. Popovich has been outspoken in support of progressive causes and caustic in his criticism of Trump.
In November, Popovich called Trump “the biggest whiner that ever walked the face of the earth,” adding: “He’s like the poorest example of a fifth-grade bully I’ve ever seen. I mean, would you want your kids to act like he does?”
A week later, Popovich suffered a stroke. He has been on an indefinite leave of absence from the team since then. Mitch Johnson is serving as acting head coach.
