Yeaahhhh boyyeeee!”

3 takeaways as Spurs beat Knicks on big night for Mamukelashvili

Sandro Mamukelashvili’s night at the Frost Bank Center on Wednesday can best be summed up by the screamed catchphrase of his invited guest, a 66-year-old New Yorker named William Jonathan Drayton Jr.
As Drayton — a rapper better known by his stage name Flavor Flav — might say: “Yeaaaah boyyyeeee!”
With Flav cheering him on courtside, Mamukelashvili exploded out of nowhere for a career-best 34 points to rocket the Spurs to an upset victory over the New York Knicks that had more than one person in the building wondering if the club should get their backup forward’s friend some season tickets.
“If that’s what he brings, sure,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “I’m happy to do that.”
Mamukelashvili met Flav at the Las Vegas Summer League as a rookie in 2021. The two hit it off and have been friends ever since.
“I FaceTime him sometimes,” Mamukelashvili said.
When Flav said he was coming to San Antonio for his birthday this week, Mamukelashvili hooked him up with tickets behind the Knicks bench, then proceeded to put on a show.
Mamukelashvili made 13 of 14 from the field. He made all seven of his 3-point tries. By the end of the game, point guard Chris Paul was consciously running actions to get him open looks.
Not bad for a player who came into the night averaging five points per game.
HAVE A NIGHT, MAMU

“I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time,” Mamukelashvili said. “I manifested and prayed for it.”
Stephon Castle added 22 points to the Spurs’ effort, while Paul chipped in 12 points and nine assists. All five of the Spurs’ starters scored in double figures.
The Spurs survived 32 points from Karl-Anthony Towns, as well as a spirited Knicks comeback from 28 points down. New York closed within single digits but was no match for the zone Mamukelashvili occupied.
The 25-year-old forward did not play in either the first or the third quarters. He scored 13 points in the second quarter to get going.
The 21 points Mamukelashvili scored in the fourth quarter alone would have been his season high. He hit all eight of his shots in the frame, including four 3-pointers, and left the floor to a standing ovation.
“I had an out-of-body experience there,” Mamukelashvili said. “Like, is this really happening?”
To which Wednesday’s guest of honor might answer: “Yeaahhhh boyyeeee!”
Here are three takeaways from the night of Mamukelashvili’s life, which helped the Spurs improve to 29-39:
1. Everybody loves Mamu
Mamukelashvili had been something of an afterthought in the Spurs’ rotation throughout his second season in San Antonio. His playing time had picked up at bit recently, and Mamukelashvili had posted three consecutive double-digit scoring games heading into Wednesday.
Nothing could have prepared the basketball-watching public for the display Mamukelashvili unleashed against New York.
It was his season high by 20 points. It eclipsed his career high of 28, set in a 2022 game against Cleveland while playing with Milwaukee.
Mamukelashvili played 44 minutes in that game. He logged 19 on Wednesday.

He became the first player in NBA history — NBA history! — to record as many as 34 points while playing fewer than 20 minutes.
“It’s been hell of a ride up and down, just staying ready,” Mamukelashvili said. “I learned that having faith and praying and just believing in yourself is the main thing. That’s what I learned today.”
Nobody, besides maybe Flavor Flav, was happier for Mamukelashvili than his teammates who have seen him attack his craft with a smile on his face despite a season’s worth of DNPs.
Few players are as beloved by their teammates as Mamukelashvili is in the Spurs’ locker room. If he had a sitcom — and after Wednesday, almost anything feels possible — it would be called “Everybody Loves Mamu.”
A sampling of the reaction from Mamu’s big game Wednesday shows as much.
From Chris Paul: “Mamu is an amazing teammate. He comes in and works hard every day, and cheers guys on. I think that was reflective on the guys to see him have a career night like that.”
From Blake Wesley: “Everybody that I know says they love Mamu. He’s a happy person, good or bad. A good guy to be around.”
From Keldon Johnson: “He’s the best teammate. Regardless of how his day is going, how the game went for him, he’s always supporting us.”
From Mitch Johnson, as a raucous celebration raged from inside the Spurs’ locker room: “He comes to work every day. He’s the most consistent person, especially when you talk about the role he has. That’s why you can hear a little bit of the guys and their feeling for him.”
2. Wesley had an impact, too
Mitch Johnson made sure to bring up the contributions of another little-used role player.
“I thought Blake Wesley would’ve been the one we’d be talking about,” Johnson said. “Except Sandro had the game he had.”
Having languished out of the rotation since December, Wesley became the Spurs’ second-unit point guard again when De’Aaron Fox opted for season-ending surgery on his bum little finger.
Wesley turned in perhaps his best game of the season Wednesday.
His six points were gravy next to the three steals, three assists and relentless defensive energy in 15 minutes.
“Every time I step on the court, it’s defense first and help guys get shots,” Wesley said.
It could be an important closing kick to the season for Wesley, who turned 22 earlier in the week.
Though under contract for next season at $4.7 million, Wesley could find himself fighting for a roster spot in training camp. A strong finish to the current season would help his case.
3. Lineup switch paid off for Spurs’ defense
Given the construction of the Spurs’ roster, there are not a lot of good answers for an opponent that boasts any kind of size at all.
Against the Knicks, Mitch Johnson made a slight tweak to the Spurs’ starting lineup, using the 6-foot-8 Jeremy Sochan as an undersized starting center instead of the 6-9 Bismack Biyombo.
The Spurs’ staff preferred Sochan against New York starter Karl-Anthony Towns, with Biyombo deemed the better matchup for Towns’ backup, Mitchell Robinson.
It was Sochan’s first start since Jan. 6 at Chicago.

Both players appeared to have their hands full, and when Towns started off scoring the first nine New York points, the move seemed like a loser.
Things settled down, however, and the Spurs enjoyed their best defensive night in months.
The 105 points were the fewest the Spurs had allowed since a 126-102 victory at the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 13. The Knicks shot 42.4% from the field and 29.7% from 3-point range. The Spurs won the rebounding battle 52-44 while also winning points in the paint (52-50) and second-chance points (18-17).
The Spurs’ small units might have had the effect — intended or unintended — of making the Knicks too reliant on Towns. The four other New York starters began the game 0-of-20 in the first half, a reason the Spurs were able to construct a 28-point early lead.
