Pity parties not part of Spurs routine

LOS ANGELES – On the eve of De’Aaron Fox’s surgery to repair the pinkie on his shooting hand, the Spurs could have been excused had they indulged in some self pity.

But instead of bemoaning Fox’s situation, the loss of star player Victor Wembanyama to a blood clot and all the other misfortune that has befallen them this season, beginning with the mild stroke coach Gregg Popovich suffered five games into the campaign, the Spurs woke up Monday with a positive attitude and, courtesy of acting head coach Mitch Johnson, plenty of perspective.

“I don’t think it’s bad luck. I think it’s the league," Johnson said. “Twenty five teams are probably going through this.”

The Spurs lost Wembanyama on Feb. 20 when they announced he had been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. Fox was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles to repair tendon damage in his pinkie.

All told the Spurs have lost 100 player games to injury this season, according to Spotrac. But that’s tied for last in the league, far behind the top 10 of Brooklyn (335), Charlotte (315), Dallas (291), Memphis (288), Oklahoma City (285), Atlanta (278), Philadelphia (271), New Orleans (265), the Los Angeles Lakers (263) and Toronto (258).

But even if the Spurs ranked higher, it’s no reason to hold a pity party, said Johnson, who will finish the regular season – it ends April 13 – as head coach while Popovich continues rehab.

“Every now and then you have a team that has one of those years and kind of stays healthy, no unexpected circumstances,” Johnson said. “We have had stuff this year. So have a lot of teams we’ve played. No one cares. No one feels sorry for you.”

Indeed, it would be wrong for the Spurs to feel sorry for themselves when so many of their recent and future opponents have been bitten badly by the injury bug or face other adversity.

The Spurs took on the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night when it was without LeBron James, who hasn’t played since March 8 because of an injured groin and is expected to be out for a while longer. The Lakers are also in the midst of a grueling schedule that includes playing three consecutive back-to-backs due in part to the Los Angeles wildfires, which forced the NBA to reschedule the Spurs game at the Lakers on Jan. 11 to Monday night.

Last week, the Spurs faced Dallas when the Mavericks were without All-Stars Anthony Davis (adductor strain) and Kyrie Irving (season-ending torn ACL) and several others. Since then, Dallas has also lost Dante Exum (fractured hand) for the season. Also last week, the Spurs faced New Orleans, which lost Dejounte Murray (ruptured Achilles tendon) in early February.

And on Friday, the Spurs, 28-38 entering Monday’s game, will host Philadelphia, which lost Joel Embiid for the remainder of the season due to ongoing left knee issues. The center only played in 19 games.

“Nobody’s going to feel sorry for us,” said Spurs guard Devin Vassell, sounding a lot like Johnson, who has been aided in his efforts to maintain a positive attitude among the players by 20th-year point guard Chris Paul.

“You still got to compete," Paul said. "You’ve almost got to have the next-man up mentality, going into games not really know who is going to be playing. It’s about competition. Regardless of what happens, you’ve got to compete.”

Said Johnson, "We’re going to continue to not skip steps and push the envelope and try and expedite our experience and development and win every game. Nothing changes.”

Minix rehabbing from shoulder surgery

Spurs two-way rookie forward Riley Minix is starting his third week of doing basketball activities after undergoing surgery Jan. 14 to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Minix, who the Spurs signed as an undrafted free agent in October after he averaged 22.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists as a fifth-year senior last season at Morehead State, suffered the season-ending injury Jan. 1 in a G League game with the Austin Spurs.

“I started to get on the court last week, do some one-hand shooting, dribbling with my good arm, so it’s been going well,” Minix said. “I’ve also been riding the bike. I’m not allowed to run yet just because the impact on my shoulder. I’m going to start doing hydro work, though, which is the underwater treadmill.”

Minix, 24, said the plan is to have him ready in time to participate in Summer League in July.

“There has been ups and downs, good days, bad days but just keep fighting through and staying positive as much as you can,” Minix said of his recovery. “Having good people around me helps. I’ve got a lot of people I can lean on that help out and these guys (teammates) make it a little easier.”

Minix said he received a few recovery pointers from Zach Collins before the Spurs traded the veteran big man to Chicago in February. Collins had surgery after last season to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

“Zach talked to me a good amount before he left,” Minix said.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Minix appeared in three preseason games for the Spurs last fall, averaging 7.7 points and 2.0 rebounds in 7.8 minutes while shooting 70.0% (8 of 12) from the floor. In three Summer League games, he averaged 12.0 points and 2.3 rebounds.

A Florida native, Minix played four seasons at NAIA Southeastern State University before transferring to Morehead State after being granted a fifth-year of eligibility due to the pandemic.

Minix isn’t the only Spurs prospect recovering from an injury.

Spanish point guard Juan Nunez, who the Spurs drafted in the second round (36th overall) last season, is recovering from a torn meniscus in his right knee he suffered in February while playing for FC Barcelona in the EuroLeague.

Nunez, 20, faces a six-month recovery period. He was averaging 5 points, 3.4 assists and 2.5 rebounds.
