尽管 C.J.

3 Takeaways as Keldon Johnson ignites Spurs’ win
San Antonio Spurs Devin Vassell (24) reacts after Jeremy Sochan (10) hit a three at the end of the third quarter, San Antonio Spurs defeated New Orleans Pelicans 119-115 on Saturday, March 15,2025 at the Frost Bank Center.
Chris Paul, the Spurs’ starting point guard and their resident yogi, had a message for his teammates trying to close out the season with two of their best players sidelined.
“Regardless of what happens,” Paul said, “you’ve still got to compete.”
It was a marching order Keldon Johnson did not need to hear twice.
The Spurs’ resident lithium battery was at his electric best Saturday, willing his team to a 119-115 victory over New Orleans at the Frost Bank Center on sheer heart and hustle.
Not only did Johnson supply 19 points off the bench. Not only did he have 12 of them during the 17-0 third-quarter run that shifted the game in the Spurs’ favor. Not only did he chip in five rebounds and three steals.
Johnson led with grit, which is the only way he knows how.

“The energy that he always brings every night is just contagious,” guard Devin Vassell said. “When he’s playing like that and he has that type of energy, all I can say is it helped us a lot.”
Johnson’s determination led to the biggest basket of the game from Vassell, who finished with 22 points.
The Spurs were clinging to a 113-111 lead when Stephon Castle missed a 3-pointer. Johnson birddogged the rebound to the corner, with the ball eventually finding Vassell for a contested 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:03 to go.
It swished, giving the Spurs five points of breathing room heading into the final minute.
“I just want to win ultimately,” Johnson said. “And I feel like coming down the stretch, that’s a winning play. It led to a big three by Devin and that was one step closer to getting the win.”
New Orleans lost despite 26 points from C.J. McCollum and 20 from Trey Murphy III. The Pelicans (18-50) played with a laundry list of players out, including star forward Zion Williamson.

The Spurs were without their top two scorers Victor Wembanyama (deep vein thrombosis) and De’Aaron Fox (hand surgery), both of whom have been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
“You’ve almost got to have the next-man up mentality, going into games not really know who is going to be playing,” Paul said. “It’s about competition.”
Saturday, Johnson showed the Spurs the way.
Here are three takeaways from the victory, which improved the Spurs to 28-38:
1. Johnson wasn’t the only bench booster
Coming into Saturday, Keldon Johnson was leading the NBA in bench scoring since the All-Star break at 16.6 points per game…
He was the head of a reserve unit that gave the Spurs a serious lift against the Pelicans.
Four of the five Spurs players who logged minutes off the bench scored in double figures. Poor Blake Wesley was the lone exception, with zero points.
Jeremy Sochan had 14 points, including a half-court buzzer-beater banked in at the halfcourt horn that gave the Spurs a 92-83 lead and momentum headed to the fourth.
Did Sochan call glass on the heave, which he says was the first half-court shot he has made in a game in his life?
“Nope,” he said with a grin.
Julian Champagnie added 12 points off the bench, while Sandro Mamukelashvili had 10.
In all, the Spurs’ reserve outscored New Orleans’ 55-24.
“With the bench, we just try to all be on one accord,” Johnson said. “We e know we got to bring energy, we know we have to play together, share the ball, communicate on defense. When the starters needed it, we give 'em that spark.”
2. Vassell about more than points
The fifth-year guard led the Spurs in scoring and made the biggest shot of the fourth quarter. When acting coach Mitch Johnson looked at Vassell’s postgame box score, he saw more than that.
He saw five rebounds. He saw three steals. He saw seven free throws attempted and six made. He saw a player who has been trying to affect the game in more ways than only his jump shot.
“It’s just the variety of ways of him impacting winning,” Mitch Johnson said.
That has been emphasis of Vassell’s since midseason, when his jumper, at times, has momentarily abandoned him.
“I struggled shooting the ball halfway through the season, and I think the biggest thing that I took away from that was just being able to affect the game in all other aspects,” Vassell said. “Whether it’s rebounding, whether it’s steals, whether it’s just being encouraging as a teammate, however the case may be, I’ve tried to have that role and carry that over every game.”

3. Malaki Branham made a wise decision
Before the game, the Spurs announced third-year guard Malaki Branham would be headed to the G League for a game and maybe more.
It was an interesting move for a player who was in the Spurs’ rotation earlier this season, but had not played much of late.
Mitch Johnson indicated the decision was Branham’s to make.
“It’s something he did not need to do and doesn’t have to do and wasn’t asked to do in terms of, (it’s) because you’re not doing something here,” the Spurs coach said. “It was more the opportunity wasn’t there for him (in San Antonio). For him to not only have that opportunity (in Austin) but to seek it out and try to take advantage of it, I think it speaks volumes.”
A former first-round draft pick, Branham had logged 16 DNPs since the turn of the year. The 21-year-old had not played double digit minutes in a game since Dec. 13.
Branham was expected to play for the Austin Spurs in their game against the Valley Suns on Sunday. It will be his first game in the G League since 2022.
“I am hoping he gets what he’s looking for, which is an opportunity to play real minutes and show all the ways that he has put in work throughout the season to get better and develop,” Mitch Johnson said.
