Victor Wembanyama is working hard to stay in shape while undergoing treatment for the blood clot that ended his season.

“There’s an extensive plan for him to be as active and aggressive as he wants to be without doing too much,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before Friday’s game against Charlotte.

Wembanyama has been riding a stationary bike, lifting weights and doing other conditioning work while the Spurs wind down the season without him. The team announced Feb. 20 that the All-Star center’s second season in the NBA had come to an end due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

“He’s trying to do everything,” Johnson said. “He would start tonight for (De’Aaron) Fox if he could.”

The Spurs announced Thursday that Fox’s season had ended as he prepares for surgery to repair the extensor tendon in his left fifth finger. Fox is set to undergo the operation next Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Rookie Stephon Castle started in Fox’s place against the Hornets.

The Spurs have said Wembanyama, 21, and Fox, 27, are expected to make full recoveries and return to the court next season.

The team has not announced a timeline for Wembanyama to return to basketball activities, but Fox said Friday he would need “12 weeks or something like that” to recover.

“I know for the first couple weeks I can’t really grab anything, but I’ll still be working out and doing whatever I can,” Fox said.

One thing he said he won’t be doing is joining Wembanyama on the stationary bike.

“I’d rather just actually get up and run,” Fox said. “I hate getting on a bike.”

Fox said he’s been impressed with all the sweat that’s been pouring off Wembanyama lately.

“It’s a telltale sign of him,” Fox said. “He wants to be out there, so he does whatever he can. Obviously, he is limited, but he’s a worker, man. He has a great work ethic, and the moment they said he could do stuff, he does stuff.”

Hornets down Spurs to sweep season series

Castle scored 26 points in his 30th career start, but the Hornets hit a franchise-record 26 3-pointers to claim an easy 145-134 win over the Spurs.

The 26 3s were also a record for a Spurs opponent.

The Spurs (27-38) trailed by as many as 31 points en route to losing for the fourth time in the last five games. Charlotte (17-49) tied an NBA record for 3-pointers in a first half with 18 on their way to sweeping their season series with the Spurs after winning 117-116 Feb. 7 in Charlotte.

“We just need more resistance. If you played a pick-up game, with no game plan, that would still be disappointing,” Johnson said of the Spurs’ defensive performance Friday. "

The Hornets have swept their season series with the Spurs three out of the last four seasons after the teams split their two games last year.

LaMelo Ball had 27 points on the strength of 7 for 11 from deep and 14 assists to lead the Hornets, who finished 26 of 46 (56.5%) from beyond the arc (56.5%) after entering the game as the NBA’s third-worst 3-point shooting team by percentage (33%).

Nick Smith Jr. added 26 for the Hornets. Miles Green added 21 and Josh Green contributed 20.

Devin Vassell had 22 points for the Spurs, who yielded the second-most points to an opponent this season.

With Fox out, Castle started for the first time since Feb. 3. The leading contender for Rookie of the Year, Castle was an efficient 10 for 17 from the field, including 3 for 7 from distance.

“It’s hard not to look at it,” Castle said of the race for Rookie of the Year. “I wouldn’t say I’ve been shooting for it. You haven’t heard me say anything about it at all all year. Just going out there and playing free and just let things work out for themselves."

Castle recorded his his fifth 20-point game this month. He also had a steal and a block.

“I think he’s done it quite a bit, so I don’t think it’s something that’s overwhelming to him,” Johnson said of Castle starting again. “I think he’ll continue to adjust and get back into rhythm.”
