Harrison Barnes had a pretty good 48 hours contributing to the Spurs on and off the court at the start of the week.
A day after scoring a season-high 29 points on 12-for-14 shooting from the field, including 4 for 6 from 3-point range, in Monday’s loss to Dallas, the 13th-year forward and his wife Brittany announced Tuesday the launch of a refurbishment initiative for three public basketball courts in under-served communities in San Antonio, Austin and Mexico.
The announcement came at the Guadalupe Community Center, the location of the first refurbished court courtesy of the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Community Fund.
“I’m incredibly excited to see this court come to life in San Antonio,” Barnes said in a statement. "Brittany and I are very passionate about giving back to our communities. This court isn’t just a place to play basketball. It’s a safe space for kids and families to connect, grow and build something special.
"San Antonio is just the beginning, and we’re looking forward to revealing more courts in Austin and beyond. Together, we want to create lasting memories and inspire the next generation to reach their potential, both on and off the court.”
Barnes and his wife also gave back to the community in a big way last month, when they donated $250,000 to the AlamoPROMISE program benefiting students at St. Philip’s College, a Historically Black College and University that also serves the Hispanic community.
The Guadalupe Community Center is a major resource center for the West Side offering financial assistance, free tax preparation, homeless outreach, an organic garden, baby boutique and After School Program to support students’ success, according to a Spurs press release.
“It is very exciting for us to receive this generous gift from the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Community Fund to refurbish and expand our sports court,” said J. Antonio Fernandez, President/CEO of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. “We hold many community events, after-school activities and summer camps that are key to serving our community with love, respect and dignity.”
Barnes, 32, also drew praise for his performance on the court. Monday’s performance hiked his per-game average to 11.7 points and his 3-point shooting percentage to a career-best 43.0.
Spurs guard Devin Vassell said Barnes’ big outing was a testament to his work at practices and shootarounds.
“It shows every morning,” Vassell said Wednesday. “He’s probably the first one in, getting shots up and just showing the consistency. He’s a pros pro and he’s helped us a lot this year, (showing us) how to take care of your body each day and just having that motor. So, ‘HB’ coming in and getting the shots up and being the type of pro that he is, those games aren’t a surprise to anybody who sees it every day.”
Barnes came to the Spurs in a trade last summer with a well-earned reputation for helping out in the other cities he’s lived in as an NBA player: Oakland, Dallas and Sacramento.
“His reputation prior to coming here was that he was the consummate pro,” Spurs general manager Brian Wright said. "But it wasn’t just as a consummate pro on the floor. It was how he invests in the community, how he conducts himself at all times. And you see that with this type of donation and the research he’s done about where he wanted to impact his community, it speaks volumes to who he is and what he cares about and how he wants to leave something lasting beyond just his play on the court.
“…We’re very proud of the person Barnes is and the people his family are. You look across the league and at the type of people you want to represent the organization, and I don’t think we could ask for anything better than Harrison Barnes and the Barnes family.”
