Jason Kidd comfortable being passed by Spurs’ Chris Paul
Now that Jason Kidd rests comfortably at No. 3 on the NBA’s all-time assist and steals chart, he has a message for the player who passed him in both categories this season.
Kidd wants Spurs point guard Chris Paul to aim even higher.
“I told him to keep going and try to get (John) Stockton,” Kidd said.
Kidd, now Dallas’ coach, told Paul as much when the pair crossed paths before the Mavericks defeated the Spurs 133-129 at the Frost Bank Center on Monday.
For Paul, that goal should prove far easier said than accomplished.
The 39-year-old has logged 498 assists and 98 steals this season to lead the Spurs in both areas. That brings Paul to 12,392 career assists (3,414 behind Stockton) and 2,697 career steals (568 behind Stockton).
Even though Paul’s chances of catching the Utah Jazz Hall of Famer are closer to none than slim, Kidd praised the 20-year veteran for making it to No. 2 on the list.
“He’s always going to be around the ball and he makes winning plays,” Kidd said. “He understands what it means to be a pro. He’s always finding a way to make a big shot or get his hand on a steal.”
If Kidd had to slide down a pair of all-time charts this room to make room for another iconic point guard, he doesn’t mind moving over for Paul.
“He’s had an incredible career,” Kidd said. “He’s a leader. He’s a winner. He competes at the highest level. Chris plays the game the right way and as he’s gotten older, he’s gotten better.”
Bumps, bruises sideline Sochan
Reserve forward Jeremy Sochan sat out Monday’s loss to the Mavericks to nurse what Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson labeled “a culmination” of nagging injuries.
“He got hit on the calf in Sacramento (Friday) and it’s been tight and gotten hit a few times since,” Johnson said. “Then he fell on his wrist.”
With another game against Dallas on tap Wednesday, Johnson said the Spurs are hopeful for a swift return for Sochan, who ranks as one of the team’s best defenders and rebounders.
“It’s going to be tough with the schedule and quick turnaround but we’re trying to treat him as much as possible,” Johnson said.
Hustle pays off for Johnson
Keldon Johnson provided 28 points off the bench in a losing cause Monday, the second time since the All-Star break he has reached that plateau.
Johnson made even more of an impression with his hustle plays down the stretch.
“It’s just who I am,” Johnson said. “I play hard. I bring energy to the team. I just want to win, ultimately. That’s my drive is winning.”
With the Spurs floundering midway through the fourth quarter, Johnson went flying out of bounds on the baseline to corral a steal, ending up in a row of camera people.
Later, he dug out a loose-ball rebound for a putback that pulled the Spurs within 125-123 with 49.8 seconds left.
“My mindset it just to bring energy, let my energy determine my play and let everything else take care of itself,” said Johnson, who is averaging 16.6 points since the break. “When I bring energy, and I bring the best Keldon Johnson forward as far as being a great teammate, all the other stuff will take care of itself.”
