Naz Reid should have known better.

With about 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half of Minnesota’s 141-124 win over the Spurs on Sunday, the Timberwolves center drifted toward the basket to leave Harrison Barnes open in the right corner. Seconds later, the 32-year-old forward drained a catch-and-shoot 3 after hauling in a Chris Paul pass from the top of the key.

Leaving one of the NBA’s top perimeter shooters open is never a good idea, especially when he’s deadly from the corners, a skill that has helped Barnes thrive in the league for 13 seasons and should help keep him around for several more.

“I always joke with guys that corner threes keep the lights on,” Barnes said. “I’ve been saying that for 13 years and it’s worked.”

The play underscored how effective Barnes has been shooting from beyond the arc this season. Entering Monday night’s home game against Dallas, he had connected on a career-best 42.4% on 4.4 attempts per outing.

Barnes is the Spurs’ most efficient deep threat and is tied for ninth in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers’ Norman Powell in 3-point percentage.

Barnes hit 2 of 5 against Minnesota on his way to 15 points, four above his season average and the 38th time he’s scored in double figures this season. It was also the 34th time this season he’s finished a game with at least two 3-point field goals.

A career 37.9% shooter from distance when the Spurs acquired him this past summer in a three-team trade, Barnes arrived in San Antonio after six seasons with Sacramento with the green light from coach Gregg Popovich to let 'em fly.

“That was the thing coach Pop wanted me to do,” Barnes said. “He told me he wanted me to shoot the ball. He wanted me to shoot with confidence and try to help space the floor, so that was the focus coming into the season. I wanted to give guys, whether it’s CP (Chris Paul), Steph (Castle),Vic (Wembanyama), Devin (Vassell), Keldon (Johnson) and now (De’Aaron) Fox, room to operate.”

It’s a role Barnes has excelled at throughout his career after Golden State selected him seventh overall out of North Carolina in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Nine times during his career the 32-year-old native of Ames, Iowa, has finished a season having connected on 38% or better from distance. He has made 106 of 250 this season, giving him eight consecutive seasons with at least 100 3s and making him one of only 11 players in the NBA to reach that milestone in every season since 2017.

The others are LeBron James, James Harden, Devin Booker, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, Buddy Hield, Fred VanVleet, Lauri Markkanen and CJ McCollum.

San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes (40) talks to San Antonio Spurs acting head coach Mitch Johnson during a second quarter timeout in the NBA game against the Brooklyn Nets at Frost Bank Center on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Nets, 127-113.

Those facts and figures highlight a hallmark of Barnes’ career: consistency.

“We’ve talked about it in a lot of different aspects or lenses in terms of his preparation, his approach, his demeanor,” said acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson, who has been filling in for Popovich since the Hall of Famer suffered a mild stroke Nov. 2. "And a lot of times, when you find that consistency in your preparation, in your personal life and in all the things you do to get ready for the game or to recover after it, the game follows.

“He’s done a great job of that. He’s just been a steady hand for us all year in a lot of ways.”

Spurs reserve forward Julian Champagnie called Barnes “consistent in everything he does.”

“He has a saying, and it’s true: How you do one thing in life is how you do everything in life,” Champagnie said. “And that’s just how he lives. He just takes it day by day and does his thing.”

Champagnie, who is shooting 36.2% from downtown on 5.8 attempts per game, said he’s tried to emulate Barnes in the hopes of becoming an even better perimeter threat.

“HB has got a strict, strict schedule when it comes to coming to the gym early,” Champagnie said. “He has his routine, and that’s one thing I’ve tried to take from HB this year is to kind of create my own routine. If you have that, you just know what’s going to happen during the day. You get your work in during the day and it kind of just translates to the game. The same way he’s shooting in practice is the same way he’s shooting in the game.”

Barnes said in addition to getting up a lot of shots at practices and shootarounds, he tries to be mindful of the variety of passes he will receive, his footwork and, above all else, the need to always shoot with confidence, especially when he’s launching them from the corners.

For the season, Barnes is connecting on 47.4% of his shots from the corners, including 52.2% from the right one.

“The biggest thing is just continuing to just find space,” Barnes said. “Guys are much more dynamic now. You look around the league, the way guys play, the way teams play. It’s about spacing and scoring, so any time I can just try to just stay moving and just create open shots for either myself or my teammates, that’s what I try to do.”
