Sochan sets example as ‘team player’
MINNEAPOLIS — Opponents view Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan as a provocateur, a player skilled at getting under their skin.
“He’s an agitator,” Portland coach Chauncey Billups said earlier this season. “And, he’s really good at it.”
But the Spurs have another way to describe Sochan.
“He is a team player,” acting head coach Mitch Johnson said. “He’ll do what is asked of him to win.”
Sure, there’s a side to Sochan foes hate. But from the Spurs’ perspective, there is also a lot to love about him, beginning with his versatility.
“His commitment and investment to the team and doing what is asked of him is tremendous,” Johnson said. “And you see him flourishing and developing all of that into the versatile puzzle piece he can be. He can fit with a lot of different types of players and different lineups, which is very valuable.”
Although coach Gregg Popovich’s experiment last season to make him a point guard failed, Sochan still handles the ball quite a bit. He’s also played small-ball center recently after injuries depleted the frontcourt. And, of course, he’s continued to serve as a defensive force while lining up at forward.
It’s the kind of Swiss Army knife skill set that Spurs general manager Brian Wright had in mind when he selected Sochan ninth overall in the 2022 NBA Draft after his one season at Baylor.
Sochan entered Sunday night’s game against the Timberwolves averaging 11.3 points, a career-best 6.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting a career-high 33.3% from 3-point range on 1.5 attempts. He’s led the team in rebounding 10 times this season and has recorded 10 or more rebounds in seven games.
“The Spurs are the team that really trusted me and picked me, and I think (versatility) is what they embedded in me and wanted from me from the start,” Sochan said. “At the end of the day, my job is to be a winning player. And I feel like I’m a player that adapts well. Whether it’s handling adversity or handling good things, I’m all about the team. So, I’m going to do everything I can do to affect the team in a good way, positive way.”
That includes taking on more of a leadership role even at the ripe old age of 21. While certainly not a rah-rah type, Sochan is getting the job done in that area through his actions.
“Actions show more, lead to more,” he said. “It’s not always going to be perfect. There are moments where I’ve had to do something and it hasn’t gone the right way. But those are the moments when you learn. So, at the end of the day, it’s all been positive.”
Spurs rookie guard Stephon Castle said he has learned plenty about playing defense in the NBA, including that an on-ball defender can be aggressive without fouling, by studying Sochan,
“That’s really a skill he has that not a lot of people can imitate, but you try to do your best to match his energy because he makes so many plays that don’t really show up in the stat sheet,” Castle said.
Sochan has also drawn praise this season for fighting his way through a fractured left thumb that required surgery and forced him to miss 13 games in from Nov. 6 through Dec. 1 and a back injury that sidelined him for five games in January. He also has adapted well to coming off the bench for the last 20 games after logging 19 starts early in the season.
“He’s been great for us when he’s been out there,” forward Harrison Barnes said. “His ability defensively, rebounding, just occupying space on the offensive floor, whether it’s rolling, whether it’s driving, finishing, things like that, he’s been great.”
Knee injury continues to sideline Bassey
Spurs backup center Charles Bassey missed his seventh game in a row Sunday due to an acute-on-chronic left knee bone bruise.
Bassey last played Feb. 23 against New Orleans.
Back-to-back troubles
Monday’s home game against Dallas will mark the completion of the Spurs’ 11th back-to-back this season, with two remaining.
The Spurs are 2-9 in the second game of back-to-backs this season, including 1-6 at the Frost Bank Center.
