Spurs’ revel in an all-time assist streak
San Antonio Spurs center Bismack Biyombo (18) passes the ball to San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell (24) while being guarded by Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton (33) during the fourth quarter at Frost Bank Center on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas. The Spurs defeated the Nets, 127-113.
It is a mantra that has been prevalent in the Spurs’ locker room for well over a decade now, the three-word throughline that has guided the team’s approach to offense under coach Gregg Popovich and now under acting coach Mitch Johnson.
Good to great.
Simply put, it is the idea is that a player should always pass up a good shot if it helps get his teammate a great one.
“That’s all we talk about – Spurs culture, the Spurs Way, good to great,” fifth-year guard Devin Vassell said. “You stick out like a sore thumb if you don’t.”
Even in an era in which the Spurs are not winning at levels they once did, it could be argued they remain one of the best “good to great” teams the NBA has seen.
In Tuesday’s 127-113 victory over Brooklyn, the Spurs collected 37 assists.
It marked their 200th consecutive game with at least 20, a streak dating to December of 2022 that stands by far as the longest in league history.
“A lot of the statistics and things of that nature that we probably don’t always value or give too much power to,” Johnson said. “But I think that’s one that’s pretty cool.”
Why?
“It’s something that we value,” Johnson said. “We value the pass, we value playing together.”
It is a manner of playing that – not surprisingly – sits well with the NBA’s active assist leader.
“That’s the way I played my entire career,” said 39-year-old point guard Chris Paul, who matched De’Aaron Fox for the team lead with seven assists against the Nets. “It just shows the culture. It shows night in and night out we’re sharing the ball.”
Given the high-pace, high-possession nature of today’s game, the Spurs’ streak might not be soon halted or threatened.
With scores routinely in the 110s and 120s, 20 assists are a bit easier to come by on a nightly basis than they used to be.
Still, the Spurs’ streak is 50 games better than the second-place team on the list. The Indiana Pacers doled out 20 assists in 150 consecutive contests from December 2022 to November 2024.
The next longest active streak belongs to the Denver Nuggets, who have accomplished the feat in 127 straight games dating to November 2023.
Worth noting, the fourth-place team on the all-time list are the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers, who had 20 assists in a row in 120 consecutive outings from October 1984 to January 1986.
“As much as it feels like 20 assists is reachable,” Johnson said, “the fact that we’ve done it that many games is something I think we have a little bit of pride about.”
Biyombo revels in big night
Bismack Biyombo celebrated his latest contract with the Spurs by giving the club its money’s worth.
A day after autographing a deal for the remainder of the season, the veteran center put up his best game in a Spurs uniform Tuesday, producing 13 points, 14 rebounds and a pair of blocks.
“It’s been great, just great,” the 32-year-old Biyombo said. “God is great, man. That’s the only thing I can really say.”
A 6-foot-8 journeyman who first arrived on a pair of 10-day contracts in February, Biyombo was elevated to the Spurs’ starting lineup upon the news All-Star center Victor Wembanyama would miss the remainder of the season.
In his eighth start and ninth appearance with the club, Biyombo produced season highs in scoring and rebounds while logging his third double-double.
The 13 points were the most for Biyombo since Nov. 18, 2023, when he put up 14 for Memphis – playing against the Spurs.
The 14 rebounds were Biyombo’s most since pulling down 15 against Utah on Nov. 10, 2023.
Though Biyombo is clearly not the same caliber player as Wembanyama, Johnson has not been surprised at the savvy big man’s easy transition to the Spurs.
“He’s been on multiple teams, and I bet his role has been pretty similar,” Johnson said. “So in that sense, he’s new in this program, but probably not too outside the realm of what he’s been asked to do before.”
