NBA: Brooklyn Nets at San Antonio Spurs

Vassell’s second-half flamethrowing gives San Antonio a much-needed runaway triumph tonight

San Antonio played its most complete quarter of the young month in a third quarter that saw them push a five point halftime lead to 19 and hold on for victory tonight. Devin Vassell, with a career high 37-point night, carried a spirited offensive effort against a young Brooklyn squad tonight, and the team impressively shared in a way (36 assists on 50 field goals and 200 consecutive games with 20 or more assists) reminiscent of Beautiful Game rosters from yesteryear. Vassell’s jumper and steal essentially ended the Nets’ mini-comeback attempt.

A determined Vassell shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and Keldon Johnson’s brutishness in the paint helped pace San Antonio to a lead in a brisk first stanza. Despite shooting over 57% for the frame, their sloppiness and Brooklyn’s length caused a handful of turnovers and allowed the visitors to stay within shouting distance. The Spurs undid a quarter’s worth of goodwill by running up the turnover count and ceding open threes to Nets wingmen, as the visitors stunned the Spurs with an 18-4 run to start the second. San Antonio’s veterans - Vassell and Barnes - steadied them and they found surprise sources of offense AND defense from Bismack Biyombo to reclaim the advantage.

Aside from a three-point detonation from Vassell (37 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals; 8-for-10 from three), it received another steady effort from Rookie of the Year favorite Stephon Castle (17 points and 6 assists). Unsung player of the game Biyombo (13 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks) battled through and turned way a thicket of Brooklyn arms tonight. Keldon Johnson (15 points and 8 rebounds) had another strong game off the bench.

The young Nets squad was paced by a pair of Cam’s - Thomas (24 points and 6 rebounds) and Johnson (17 points and 4 assists) and three others in double figures.

Observations

  • Chris Paul with the black undershirt is a YMCA fashion statement.
  • I lost track of how many first quarter Nets’ outside shots bricked off the rim and richocheted half of the distance of the original shot attempt. (That would be dope if that were an official stat).
  • Castle Hills: Castle did the pass off the unwitting defender’s backside for a baseline bucket late in the third.
  • Sequence of the Game #1: Castle, (who else?) after bringing down a carom, had the wherewithal to launch the ball ahead to an awaiting Sochan who fed Julian Champagnie for a transition dunk at 1.2 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Sequence of the Game #2: Midway through a difficult second period, Vassell defiantly blocked a Net’s attempt at the rim which led to a Paul three at the other end.
  • Bo Knows: I didn’t know Biyombo had a steady left handed hook shot. On top of his surprise offensive output tonight, his heady play around both rims, was needed against the athletic Nets.
  • Devin’s Deeds: While his block late in the half was already impressive, he deflected a Net’s pass, and was rewarded at the other end for his agresssion with a highlight dunk and freebie.

Game Rundown

In an encouraging opening salvo, Vassell made his first two shots and they were his bread-and-butter ones (wing three and the corkscrew fadeaway in the paint). Barnes also hit a three from his comfort spot deep on the sideline. Vassell’s second three put the Spurs up eight. Thomas fired shots with impunity, while Russell ended up finding early success. Bismack Biyombo couldn’t throw down Castle’s lob attempt, but Keldon Johnson did slam home Paul’s moments later. Johnson’s wing three put San Antonio up 18-9. Brooklyn’s on-the-ball-pressure allowed them turn the Spurs over six times and shave the deficit quickly. The Spurs behind Johnson steadied themselves to take a 31-25 lead.

Brooklyn took advantage of San Antonio’s first cold spell, and a 10-0 scoring burst led by Trenton Watford put the Nets ahead. Castle’s runner put an end to that run, but the Nets, led by unheralded players like Ziaire Williams, Tyrese Martin, and Jalen Wilson, peppered the nets from outside to go up eight. Consecutive and-1s by Harrison Barnes and Vassell nudged San Antonio back ahead briefly. After some exciting back-and-forth action, including a Biyombo block party, a ferocious tipback by Johnson and coast-to-coast Fox finish enabled the Spurs to head to the break up five.

Russell’s three briefly halted a San Antonio run to start the third. Starting with a Fox alley-oop to Biyombo and ending with a pair of Vassell threes, the Spurs extended their lead. Vassell’s third three of the third, Paul’s stepback three, and Castle’s change-of-pace banker put San Antonio up 21. Brooklyn drove to the basket to earn some free throws to slice into the deficit, but those were only an appetizer to Vassell’s sixth and seventh threes of the game. Castle’s butt-pass dunk and reverse capped off a 37-23 quarter for San Antonio.
