San Antonio vs. Oklahoma City, Final Score: Spurs hang close with Thunder before fading late, 132-146

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs had the hotter hand over two quarters of impressive offensive fireworks, but the Thunder’s execution, depth, and starpower won out at the end

In De’Aaron Fox’s home debut and San Antonio’s first real home game in 28+ days, they gave Oklahoma City all that they could handle in this SEGABABA by shooting their way to a nine-point second quarter lead before ceding all of that margin over several minutes of a rough third quarter. Then Young star Jalen Williams carried OKC offensively in the fourth quarter with what the ESPN’s broadcast team described as a ‘deep bag,’ and the Western Conference leaders skirted away with a road victory.

A supremely high-scoring opening quarter, where MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Cason Wallace, Williams, Stephon Castle, and Harrison Barnes shined brightest, saw the Thunder grab a 41-38 lead. The offensive fireworks of the first were nearly replicated in the second period, as the Spurs’ Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan spearheaded a thrust into the lead for the hosts. San Antonio went to the break up 77-72 and the squads blistering the nets to the tune of 25 threes. A wonderfully-played game was marred by an altercation among several Thunder and Spur players late in the third stanza which resulted in the ejection of Julian Chmpagnie, Kenrich Williams, and Lu Dort.

The Thunder were paced by career high scoring output from Williams (41 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds) and Gilgeous-Alexander (31 points and 8 assists). Wallace chipped in 19 points as his team connected on 19 of 42 threes.

San Antonio received an unbalanced albeit spirited efforts with Rookie of the Year favorite Castle nearly getting his career high (32 points and 8 rebounds) and Jeremy Sochan (15 points and 4 assists) leading the way off the bench. Fox (20 points), Devin Vassell (15 points), and Barnes (14 points) also had double-digit scoring in the home loss.

Observations

  • This is the first Final Score where my father is simultaneously watching the game while informing me whom the Spurs should draft in June.
  • Devin’s Deeds: Vassell drove it into the teeth of the defense and knocked down a degree-of-difficulty lefty lay-up early in the fourth.
  • After watching the USF / Gonzaga game last night, Gonzaga seems to have pumped out a consistent stream of NBA-worthy bigs in the last dozen years: Kelly Olynyk, Domantas Sabonis, zach collins (lower case on purpose), Rui Hachimura, Drew Timme, OKC’s Chet Holmgren, with Graham Ike, Braden Huff, and Ben Gregg looking pretty decent on this year’s squad.
  • I can’t recall a prior Spurs championship team where they celebrated and talked junk while going up 20 points in the first quarter (like Boston did when they went up 25-3 Friday night).
  • Sequence of the Game: Chris Paul found Sochan in traffic for an acrobatic lay-up / and-1 midway through the third quarter.
  • Castle HIlls: He took a Fox pass late in the third quarter and converted a difficult Jordan-esque reverse lay-up and amassed a highlight reel’s worth of great plays throughout.
  • Isaiah Hartenstein was likened to the Hamburglar with his jet black facemask.
  • Standings Watch: With the Portland (27-34) loss to Cleveland earlier in the afternoon, San Antonio (25-34) remained one full game behind the Blazers.

Game Rundown

A handful of threes from the tip put OKC up early. Vassell made San Antonio’s first two buckets, while Fox knocked down the Spurs’ next two. Wallace’s and-1 increased the Thunder lead to eight. A trio of Harrison Barnes’ threes were countered by paint buckets from Hartenstein. Johnson, Castle, and Champagnie helped San Antonio rain down ten threes for the quarter, and they closed within two. The teams put up a lightning fast 20 points in the final two minutes of the opening frame, as the teams combined to connect on 17(!) threes. The Thunder left the first up three.

Sochan started things in the second by flinging up a wing three and guiding home two give-and-go layups. Castle’s pair of field goals helped put San Antonio in the lead momentarily. The Spurs also managed to keep pace despite either Sochan or Barnes being their de-facto center for chunks of the period. Gilgeous-Alexander slithered every which way to earn impressive baskets. The only thing that seemingly stopped Johnson was foul trouble. The teams again put up a flurry (24) of points in the closing 2+ minutes with the Spurs earning every bit of its five point advantage.

While the teams regressed to the mean in a colder-shooting third, Wallace’s corner three trimmed the Thunder deficit to one. Dort’s successive offensive rebounds and putbacks got OKC back into the lead for good shortly after. Fox found his shooting touch to prevent a runaway Thunder surge. Gilgeous-Alexander’s fast break lay-up put OKC up four. Johnson was whistled for his fifth foul on a questionable call. Shortly after, and while Sochan threw down a dunk, Champagnie and Kenrich Williams tussled near halfcourt with the officials doling out these punishments: ejections of Champagnie, Williams, and Lu Dort. A pair of gritty baskets from Castle kept San Antonio close, but OKC’s better shooting gave them an eight point cushion heading into the fourth.
