评分:A

评分:A-

评分:A

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies – Game #58

The San Antonio Spurs snapped their four-game losing streak by beating the Memphis Grizzlies on the last stop of the Rodeo Road Trip. The 130-128 victory improved San Antonio’s record to 25-33 on the season.

Both teams came out firing in the first quarter and neither squad gained any traction. In the second period, the Spurs played outstanding basketball. The good guys couldn’t be stopped offensively and led by as many as 22 points in the quarter. When the smoke settled, the Spurs had outscored the Grizzlies 46-28 in the period.

Unfortunately, the Grizzlies were able to grab the momentum in the third quarter. Memphis came all the way back by the beginning stages of the fourth period.

At the end, the Grizzlies kept hitting big shot after big shot to stay in it. But, thankfully, De’Aaron Fox did what he does: hit a clutch shot with a couple seconds remaining. The mid-range jumper gave the Spurs a two-point advantage and the much-needed win.

While the Grizzlies didn’t have Ja Morant or Desmond Bane, this was still a big win for the Spurs. They desperately needed this type of feel-good victory after the recent news that neither Victor Wembanyama nor Gregg Popovich are returning this season.

Spurs at Grizzlies – Final Grades

De’Aaron Fox

Obviously, Fox’s outing will be remembered for his clutch shot. It was a stellar move and a gutsy shot. Beyond that bucket, Fox played pretty well. I thought his passing was better than it has been recently. His shot-selection was better, he flashed elite athleticism and he was more animated on the defensive end. Fox wasn’t as efficient as he needs to be going forward but otherwise he played decently well.

Grade: B+

Devin Vassell

Vassell continues to struggle to put together a pair of productive halves. In the first half in Memphis, he was really good. He was 6-for-9 from the field and looked extra spry. Sadly, his second half was a disaster. He shot poorly and the Grizzlies were at their best when Vassell was slowing up San Antonio’s attack and hurting their defense with his lackluster play. Vassell desperately needs a complete showing sometime soon.

Grade: C-

Chris Paul

Paul was rather productive in his 20 minutes. He shot well and handed out eight assists. I liked his aggression level offensively. Truth be told, though, Paul was a bit looser with the ball than usual and his defensive play was a step slow.

Grade: C+

Harrison Barnes

Barnes getting his playing time limited to 18 minutes wasn’t due to his offense. His shooting was fine and he was making the right reads. Defensively, though, he wasn’t doing much. In fact, he finished the game without a rebound, steal, block or even a foul.

Grade: C-

Bismack Biyombo

Biyombo got a contract for the rest of the season and was once again in the starting lineup. He was fine against the Grizzlies. He finished off looks in the paint, rebounded with gusto, threw his body around in the lane and remained vigilant on the defensive end. Biyombo is doing nothing to lose his role with his new team.

Grade: B

Stephon Castle

It was another great game for Castle. There were long stretches where he was the best Spurs player on the court. Offensively, he gave San Antonio a go-to presence. His attacking of the basket was helpful. He shot with confidence from the perimeter. The rookie got the charity stripe for important free throws. Playmaking-wise, the rookie was making outstanding decisions; his passes were quick and on target and he only turned it over once. Defensively, Castle had a few fantastic possessions. Net-net, this kid looks like a stud in the making and he played a huge role in this win.

Grade: A

Keldon Johnson

Johnson remains on fire. After a very slow start to the season, he has been great since the All-Star break. Suddenly, he remembered how to shoot three-pointers and his touch at the hoop is really good. When he gets a lane to the orange, Johnson is finishing with power. I also like his pass-shot decisions right now. Against the Grizzlies, he didn’t turn the ball over and also played above average defense.

Grade: A-

Jeremy Sochan

Sochan was a major difference-maker in the first half against the Grizzlies. He hit all five of his shots in the first two quarters while playing outstanding defense and gobbling up boards. After halftime, Sochan had his moments but wasn’t nearly as sharp. That said, his first half play was so great that it overshadowed any faults in the second half.

Grade: B+

Julian Champagnie

Champagnie quietly had a very, very good game. Defensively, he was flying around the court, pounding the glass and making plays. Offensively, Champagnie picked his attempts well, shot it straight, passed it wisely and limited his mistakes. While he didn’t do anything amazingly flashy, Champagnie’s rock solid play in all aspects of the game really aided the cause.

Grade: A

Mitch Johnson

This was a very well coached game by Johnson. He saw that the bench was rolling so he gave them extended minutes. He allowed Castle to run the show for long stretches. In money time, the playcalling allowed for Fox to thrive. Instead of instinctively relying on the vets, Johnson went with the players who were performing. Well done.
