NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs

Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs Oklahoma City Thunder

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs make their official return home from the Rodeo Road Trip to the Frost Bank Center for a match-up with the Thunder

With 23 games left, the Oklahoma City Thunder are trying to finish the season both healthy and strong. Led by a stifling defense, an MVP worthy season from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and an 11-2 record in February, OKC’s 48-11 record leads the Western Conference by a significant margin. It’s an achievement made all the more impressive considering that they’ve dealt with more than their fair share of injuries this season. The most significant of those injury casualties, Chet Holmgren, made his return just before the All Star Break after missing nearly 3 full months with a hip injury.

For the San Antonio Spurs, long grind of what has become a lost season continues to play out. They come into tonight’s game (a SEGABABA) off of a win against the Memphis Grizzlies without Ja Morant thanks to some late-heroics from De’Aaron Fox. After so many close losses recently, San Antonio has something to feel good about heading into this one.

San Antonio Spurs (24-34) vs Oklahoma City Thunder (48-11)

March 2 2025 | 6:00 PM CT

Spurs Injuries: Victor Wembanyama, OUT,

Pelicans Injuries: Chet Holmgren, ankle (OUT), Isaiah Joe, back (OUT), Ousmane Dieng, wrist (questionable)

What to watch for

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has truly put together a phenomenal season, solidifying his status as arguably the league’s best scorer. Utilizing an all-around offensive game built upon his schifty athleticism, his 32.3 PPG leads the league in scoring and he’s doing it on incredibly efficient numbers. He has hit the 30-point mark 28 times this season and has 3 games scoring at least 50 as well. With just a few weeks left to go in the season, Gilgeous-Alexander appears poised to win his first MVP trophy.
  • The Stephon Castle Playing Time Drama has seemingly come to an end, as the rookie has gotten significant playing time in each of the last two games and has played some really solid ball in the process. Castle has scored 46 points combined in those last two games, but even more impressive has been how well he’s protected the ball while still setting teammates up. He has 13 assists in each of these games against just a single turnover.
  • Jalen Williams completes the OKC backcourt with SGA. Coming off his first All Star appearance, Williams plays the perfect Robin role for Gilgeous-Alexander. He’s more than capable of breaking down a defense on his own to create looks for both himself and others (5.2 assists a game this year). His 21 points per game are 2nd on the Thunder.
  • OKC will be without Chet Holmgren tonight due to an ankle sprain suffered in their win over the Atlanta Hawks. Holmgren has played just 7 games since returning from an injury that kept him out for 3 months. With Holmgren out, Isaiah Hartenstein likely will resume his role as the Thunder’s starting big. Hartenstein is averaging a double double in 28 minutes a game.
  • Lu Dort may not play a very flashy game, but his tenacity on defense sets the tone for OKC night in and night out. He’s grown by leaps and bounds as a shooter as well, shooting a career-high 40% from beyond the arc this season, breaking his mark of 39% from last season. For comparison, Dort’s first 4 seasons never saw him break the 35% mark at all.
