San Antonio at Memphis, Final Score: Spurs beat Grizzlies 130-128 thanks to De’Aaron Fox’s game-winner

NBA: San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies

The Spurs had to suffer, but got the win in the end.

In the final game of a long road trip, the Spurs faced a shorthanded Grizzlies team that gave them everything they could handle. Despite the Silver and Black leading by as many as 22 at one point, it took a De’Aaron Fox game-winner to seal the victory. Jaren Jackson Jr. led all scorers with 42 while six players scored in double figures for San Antonio.

The Spurs looked focused early on, playing disruptive defense and using small lineups to scramble and help, taking advantage of a Grizzlies offense that lacked perimeter scoring. The pace was high and the game wasn’t always pretty, but San Antonio managed to get points on the board to keep up in the first quarter and put a run together to start the second thanks to good transition offense and relentless drive-and-kicks. The effort didn’t wane after creating a double-digit lead and the execution got even sharper, leading to a 77-58 lead at halftime for the Spurs.

Complacency was set to be San Antonio’s biggest enemy in the second half, and the early turnovers and unfocused defense suggested they would succumb to it. As the minutes passed the Spurs started to compete again, but the Grizzlies had momentum on their side and forced their opponent to play at their preferred pace. The buffer the Silver and Black worked hard to create disappeared and it was clear the game would go down to the wire. As the two teams traded buckets and mini runs, it all came down to one possession. With the score tied at 128, De’Aaron Fox drove left, stopped on a dime, and hit a midrange jumper to give San Antonio the win.

Observations

  • Jeremy Sochan was available after missing the second half of the matchup against the Rockets. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, were on the second game of a back-to-back and didn’t have Ja Morant, Brandon Clarke and Desmond Bane available. It was a perfect opportunity to beat an opponent that had foiled them in three previous meetings and the Spurs took advantage of it.
  • Devin Vassell was aggressive early, relying on his midrange jumper to provide much-needed halfcourt scoring. He played a huge part in getting the Spurs going in the first quarter. He continued to look for his shot in the third, which was encouraging. The team went away from him in the fourth, but he did his job.
  • Jaylen Wells and Stephon Castle are competing for Rookie of the Year. It’s safe to say that Castle won the battle on Saturday. The fourth overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft finished with 24 points, three rebounds and seven assists while the Grizzlies’ second-rounder scored 18 and had three assists. Wells is a great role player and has a good case to get the award but Castle seems like a vastly superior prospect.
  • The Spurs scored 77 first-half points, a season high. Everything was working, from the transition attack to the outside shots. It was obvious as it was happening that it wouldn’t be sustainable but it was definitely fun to watch.
  • Sochan did work as the backup center, crashing the offensive glass and doing a solid job on Jaren Jackson Jr. on defense. When Memphis went big, the small lineup thrived. Once they started to pull JJJ away from the paint to drag Sochan out with him, the interior defense suffered. The Center Sochan experiment is going better than the Point Sochan one, but hopefully, at some point, he’ll get to play his natural position more often.
  • Both teams were upset with the officiating and things got chippy at times. Luke Kennard was ejected and Stephon Castle and Zach Edey fought for the ball after getting tied up. The Spurs and Grizzlies don’t seem to like each other much, which could make for some fun matchups in the coming years.
  • The Spurs snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Spurs will finally go home to the Frost Bank Center, hosting the Thunder on Sunday. Tip-off will be at 6:00 PM CT on ESPN.
