San Antonio Spurs find small lineups to create big problems
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – With All-Star center Victor Wembanyama on the shelf and top backup Charles Bassey having gone back on the injured list with a knee issue, the Spurs enter each game with no player taller than 6-foot-9 in the rotation.
That puts them at an obvious size disadvantage, which in turn puts an emphasis on cleaning the glass in permanent marker on the team’s nightly scouting report.
“It’s no secret the rebounding is going to be a thing every game,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s not just for certain opponents or bigger matchups or certain players.”
It was a problem again Wednesday in a 118-106 loss in Houston.
It will likely be a problem – or at least a challenge – again when the Spurs return to the floor Saturday in Memphis.
Against the Rockets, the Spurs were battered on the boards 60-41. They gave up 20 offensive rebounds, making it a minor miracle they were able to stay in the ballpark in terms of second-chance points, losing that category 18-15.
The issue was exacerbated in the first half when Jeremy Sochan left the game for precautionary reasons after taking a blow to the head. At the time, he was the Spurs’ leading rebounder with five.
“I think the guys fought on the boards,” Johnson said. “The numbers wouldn’t reflect that necessarily. Of all the aspects of the game, there weren’t too many possessions I was pissed off about the fight or the effort on the boards.”
Even before the Spurs announced Wembanyama would miss the remainder of the season due to a blood clot, they were thin in the frontcourt.
Just before the All-Star break, the Spurs signed veteran big man Bismack Biyombo to a 10-day contract to back up Wembanyama. They have since inked Biyombo to a second 10-day contract to start in Wembanyama’s place.
In six games with the Spurs, including five starts, the 32-year-old Biyombo has averaged 5.7 points and five rebounds per night. The Spurs have attempted to fill in the blanks behind him with Sochan and the 6-9 Sandro Mamukelashvili.
Johnson made clear the Spurs’ solutions go beyond whichever player is designated as the team’s center.
“It’s going to be a team effort,” Johnson said. “Bismack Biyombo is not going to come in and solve the problems, or playing Sandro next to Bismack or whatever it may be. It’s going to have to be a gang rebound, all five players on the court participating just by virtue of how we’re built right now.”
With Wembanyama out, and no ready backup in sight, opposing teams are taking full advantage of the lack of a 7-foot-3 extraterrestrial shot blocker in the middle of the Spurs’ defense.
The Spurs’ past four opponents have all attempted at least half their shots in the paint, grabbed at least 17 offensive rebounds and logged at least 16 second-chance points. The Spurs are 0-4 in those games.
If the undersized Spurs are to turn things around on the boards, it will take a proverbial team effort, Johnson said.
“It’s too much to ask certain players to box out this person and go get the rebound,” Johnson said. “Again, that is going to be probably almost every night, so we’re going to need all five on the floor participating in that.”
Keldon Johnson finds post All-Star groove
When news of the Wembanyama’s situation hit last week, Keldon Johnson made a vow to himself to lead by example.
It has been so far so good for the fifth-year forward.
Johnson was a bright spot in the loss to the Rockets, barreling his way to 22 points. He is the only player on the roster to have scored in double figures in each of the team’s five games since the All-Star break.
“I’ve just been bringing energy,” Keldon Johnson said. “After the All-Star break, that’s been my emphasis. Just continue to be Keldon, continue to try to bring it, continue to try and hype my teammates as much as possible.”
In the five games since the break, Johnson is averaging 18.8 points. He is shooting 70.6% during that span (36 of 51) while hitting 46.7% from 3-point range.
“I think Keldon has been great,” Mitch Johnson said. “He has thrived when he has had opportunities and there’s been times when he hasn’t had as many opportunities. (Lately) you see somebody who’s got a little bit more opportunities. He’s taken advantage of it.”
