What We Learned from the Spurs’ Loss to the Pistons
With Wemby sidelined, the Spurs are wafer-thin at the center position.
What a difference a day makes. On Wednesday, I couldn’t wait for Thursday’s game. I was hoping the Spurs, with two quasi-home games ahead, followed by a winnable mini-series in New Orleans, could go on a run and somehow get back into that play-in mix.
Then on Thursday I learned, here in a PtR comment thread, that Victor Wembanyama was going to miss the rest of the season. My initial reaction, which now looks completely dumb: A tank move? I even went on to write that in the comment thread. I took some flak for that, and rightfully so. What can I say? Sometimes people say stupid things. And I’m certainly no exception. I’m sorry.
There’s one thing, and really only one thing, that matters here: Victor’s health. It doesn’t matter that he’s going to miss the rest of the season. It matters even less that we won’t see him play basketball before October.
The good thing is that the Spurs have voiced optimism about his condition, and so have a number of experts who were asked about the matter. Len Werle, a German NBA podcaster, had his father, a cardiologist, come on Vom Parkplatz to explain (in a wonderful Swabian accent) what thrombosis actually is and what can be done against it.
I’m not going to recount what was said because I don’t feel confident in my ability to describe medical conditions, but one thing he said made me feel hopeful for Wemby: Pulmonary embolisms are far less common when the thrombosis is in the upper body.
On the other hand, the Spurs now have to find a way to deal with this situation and establish their priorities. Improving their lottery odds is one possible priority. Let’s face it: There’s nothing left to win for the Spurs this season.
Also, since the trade for De’Aaron Fox, some things suggest that winning wasn’t the top priority anyway. This trend continued last night in the blowout loss to the rising Detroit Pistons.
Takeaways
- The starting lineup with two point guards – Chris Paul and De’Aaron Fox – and Devin Vassell at the three continues to amaze me, and not in a good way. Not only is it an extremely small starting lineup, but it also puts Devin Vassell in a position where he clearly can’t – or doesn’t want to – operate. His touches have been reduced, and on the rare occasions when he has the ball, he does things that don’t make much sense, like taking a tough shot over two defenders. Fox, an All-Star-caliber player in his prime, somehow works in that lineup, but CP3 and Vassell combining for a measly nine points on 3-of-10 shooting in 44 minutes of play is simply not starter material. Then again, if it helps improve the team’s long term development (or its lottery odds) and that’s by design, then so be it.
- Five and a half minutes into the game, Jeremy Sochan and Stephon Castle entered the game together. You’d think the previously poor defense would improve, but the opposite was the case. The only guy providing good defense for the Spurs in the stretch that followed was Fox. The Pistons scored on almost every possession, except when stopped by Fox. Meanwhile, on the offensive end, the field belongs to Stephon Castle – with respectable results. Little spacing creates difficult conditions for Castle when attacking the basket, but I’m happy to live with that. Castle’s development should be a top priority with Wemby sidelined. And to maximize his development, maybe he should play more than 13 minutes (and some more without Sochan).
- With Bismack Biyombo and Charles Bassey the only options at center for the time being, it will be tough forthe Spurs to many games. Neither of them is cut out for more than backup minutes. Bassey is often out of position on the defensive end, and Mamu, who was also used as a five last night, isn’t really a center – and is strictly a one-way player on top of that. The Spurs were wide open like a barn door over and over again last night, and they got killed on the boards – an easy kill for a guy like Jalen Duren. (I grew up enjoying players like Dale Davis and Kevin Willis, and it’s fun to watch Duren’s work on the court – just not against the Spurs.)
- Speaking of fun things, on a night when not much was going well, Keldon “Aaaaayyyyyy” Johnson made me smile numerous times. And so did Fox. The Spurs finally have another player with skills that stand out even among the best NBA athletes. Fox’s handle is a thing of beauty, and so is his movement when he stretches for a layup. He’s the kind of guy who makes you realize what an advantage it is to be quicker than the rest. Great to see him in Silver and Black! In his post-game interviews, he also comes across as a genuinely friendly and refreshingly positive guy.
