AUSTIN – Ausar Thompson was on his way to Detroit Metropolitan Airport to catch the Pistons’ flight to central Texas on Thursday morning when news broke that stopped him in his tracks.

The Piston forward’s one-word, knee-jerk reaction to the announcement that Victor Wembanyama would miss the remainder of the season with a blood clot issue was like that of Spurs fans everywhere.

“I was like, ‘Damn,’ ” Thompson said.

The news hit closer to home than most for the 22-year-old Thompson.

He is one of three active NBA players to have returned to the court after suffering a blood clot. The others are Toronto’s Brandon Ingram and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Christian Koloko.

Thompson was diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg March 9 of last year, and missed the remainder of what had to that point been a promising rookie season. He was medically cleared to resume 5-on-5 competition on Nov. 11, and has appeared in 33 games for Detroit this season with 22 starts.

Thompson’s message for Wembanyama, then, carries weight. And it is an encouraging one for those who follow the Spurs.

“He’s going to get through it,” Thompson said, speaking on the court at the Moody Center on Friday before the Pistons were to face the Spurs. “I know he is.”

Thompson has ample reason to root for a swift return for the 21-year-old Wembanyama. The two were members of the same draft class, with Wembanyama going first overall in 2023 and Thompson going fifth.

“I love watching him play,” Thompson said. “I can’t wait to see him back out there.”

That will take time, Thompson said.

His diagnosis was slightly different than Wembanyama’s.

Spurs center Victor Wembanyama shown Feb, 12 against the Celtics in Boston. The game appears to be his last for the season, due to a blot clot in his shoulder the Spurs announced Thursday.

After returning to from last week’s All-Star game in San Francisco, Wembanyama complained of discomfort in his right shoulder. Medical tests revealed what doctors are calling deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot that has developed in a deep vein of the body.

The initial course of treatment, however, is the same for both players. Thompson – like Wembanyama now – was shut down from basketball activities and placed on a steady regimen of blood-thinning medication for three months.

Players are barred from any kind of full contact work while on anti-coagulants. For Thompson, the worst part was the waiting. The eight months he spent without playing in a competitive basketball game was the longest drought of his life.

“You just have to let time take its course,” Thompson said.

Thompson returned to the floor for a Nov. 25 game against Toronto, scoring five points on 2-of-8 shooting in 16 minutes of a 102-100 Detroit victory.

“I was rusty, but we won,” Thompson said. “So I was happy.”

As this season has progressed, Thompson has shown no ill effects from his recovery. Except for a small dip in rebounding, Thompson’s numbers are up across the board compared to his rookie campaign.

The Pistons’ starting small forward headed into Friday’s contest in Austin averaging 9.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 55% from the floor.

The Spurs have offered no firm timetable for Wembanyama’s recovery, though team doctors are optimistic he will be ready for the start of next season. Thompson, more than most, understands the psychological strain that uncertainty can have on a competitive basketball player.

“I just wanted to get back on the court,” Thompson said. “I was blessed to get back on the court quickly. I’m praying that he has the same opportunity.”

Thompson owns no medical degree, but nevertheless remains hopeful Wembanyama will beat even the rosiest of projections.

“(Doctors have) experienced this with two players in a short time,” Thompson said, referring to himself and Koloko. “With that, they have a lot more knowledge on it. They know how to treat it better. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets back faster.”

Wembanyama ended his sophomore campaign prematurely averaging 22.5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals and an NBA-leading 3.8 blocks per game.

Thompson, like everyone else across the NBA, is pulling for Wembanyama to get back to work as soon as he can. No matter how long it takes.

“I’m praying for him,” Thompson said, “that he comes back as fast as possible and does even greater than he’s already been doing.”
