With addition of Fox, Durant sees Spurs becoming ‘dangerous team’

AUSTIN - Phoenix superstar Kevin Durant expects the Spurs to eventually become a “great team” after recently acquired guard De’Aaron Fox gains chemistry with his new teammates.

“It is always tough to add guys of that caliber to your program, so it’s going to be some ups and downs with that team,” Durant said Wednesday. “But once they figure their rhythm out with each other, it’s going to be dangerous.”

The Spurs acquired Fox in a three-team trade that brought the explosive point guard to San Antonio from Sacramento, where he starred for seven and a half seasons after the Kings drafted him fifth overall in 2017.

The Spurs (23-29) are 2-3 since acquiring Fox, who is is averaging 21.6 points, 7.8 assists, and 1.8 steals in that span after scoring at least 22 points in four of those outings.

“De’Aaron is an all-world player, all-star player who can do everything on the floor offensively: pass the ball, be athletic, can shoot the three,” Durant said. “You add that to any team, man, that’s going to be a problem. It’s just a matter of figuring out how that on-court chemistry is going to work. And that’s mainly on the coaches and the players to come together and figure that out. But I think they will be a great team moving forward.”

Fox said he embraces the challenge of fulfilling such high expectations having faced such tasks earlier in his basketball career.

“Committing to Kentucky (out of Cypress Lakes High in Katy), you have an expectation to win a championship every single year, even though half or four of our five starters were 18 years old,” Fox said. “And then for me coming into the league, a big thing was (making the playoffs). And a big reason I wanted to come (to the Spurs) was I felt like they had obviously a young group of guys that had a lot of potential that could definitely do big things in this league.”

In the Spurs, Fox joined a team with All-Star center Victor Wembanyama as its cornerstone and several other talented young players supporting him, including Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Stephon Castle, the leading candidate to win Rookie of the Year honors.

“He’s playing based off of his talent, his skill level,” Fox said of Castle, “and I feel as soon as he really starts to learn the game - and I tell people all the time my biggest jump was from my first to my second year, and then I kind of just gradually got better year after year - the jump he can make could be amazing, could be crazy.”

As for Wembanyama, he’s already one of the best players in the league, and Fox is determined to gain chemistry with him on the court, a process he acknowledge could take time.

“How many of us have played with somebody like Vic?” Fox said. “So, you try to learn his spots. Obviously, there are times where you can throw it to the moon and he’ll go get it. But just learning each other’s tendencies is the biggest thing. Playing with a big like that is very unique. He does step out…But whenever you have that type of talent, you just try to jell as fast as possible. But you want to win games while going through that process.”
