SAN FRANCISCO — Spurs guard Stephon Castle learned a lesson participating in his first NBA Slam Dunk Contest: Pack some props next time.
Using an array of bells and whistles, Orlando Magic G Leaguer Mac McClung outdueled Castle, the leader in the race to win Rookie of the Year, Saturday night to become the first player to claim the competition three years in a row.
McClung scored a unanimous 50 on all four of his dunks including a 360 over a Kia K5 sedan.
A night after winning the Rising Stars MVP, Castle scored a 49.6 on his first dunk in the final round and 50 on his second, a 360 in which he wrapped the ball behind his back before executing a ferocious left-handed slam. But McClung wrapped up the title by jumping over an assistant on a riser and tapping the rim with the ball before throwing it down.
McClung also leaped over 6-foot-11 Cavaliers center Evan Mobley in another gimmick that ended with him kissing the rim with the ball before recording a two-handed slam.
In the end, the 6-foot-6 Castle’s more aesthetically pleasing dunks were no match for the props and the 6-2 McClung’s considerable hops and showmanship - at least in the minds of the judges.
“I think just the little add of creativity kind of pushes you over the edge,” said Castle, 20. “It’s not my call to say who had the better dunks. That’s up to (the judges). And I guess they went with Mac.”
McClung, 26, matched Nate Robinson as the only other player to win the event, which started in 1984, three times. Robinson captured it in 2006, 2009 and 2010.
Asked if he was the greatest dunker of all time, McClung said, “I definitely don’t think that’s something for me to say. I appreciate that you are saying that, but, no, I think I was just extremely honored to be a part of this weekend. I think the biggest thing is I genuinely love this contest, and I’m very honored to be here and just very appreciative.”
Castle emerged from a field of three challengers that included Chicago rookie Matas Buzelis and Milwaukee’s Andre Jackson Jr. to try and unseat McClung, who called the fourth overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft “amazing.”
“He surprised me so much, and he definitely came prepared and it was just really fun being out there with him,” McClung said. “And I also think he is an incredible basketball player. I can’t wait to see what his future is.”
No matter the outcome, Castle said he was “happy” with his overall performance.

“I felt like my third dunk probably should have been a 50 and we could have went to a dunk off,” he said. “I don’t know if that’s what the crowd would have wanted, but overall I was happy with it.”
To cope with losing a competition he thought he really had a good shot at winning, Castle leaned on some advice from his mentor, 39-year-old Spurs point guard Chris Paul.
“Really just as a rookie, not get too down on myself when I make mistakes,” he said. "Just always knowing that there’s a learning curve behind everything. You’re not going to be perfect. I always try to hold myself to a high standard, so he has tried to keep me leveled out.
