Wembanyama goes through ‘intense’ but ‘fun’ day in Bay Area
Spurs center Victor Wembanyama works with kids during an appearance at Jr.NBA on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, where he was set to play in his first All-Star Game.
SAN FRANCISCO - Victor Wembanyama had a busy but enjoyable day at NBA All-Star Weekend.
A first-time All-Star, the Spurs sophomore center made a series of appearances Friday in the Bay Area just two days after recording 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 36 minutes in a 116-103 loss in Boston.
After flying cross country on a charter jet shortly after the game and getting a little rest Thursday morning, Wembanyama was back at it with appearances in both San Francisco and Oakland. His busiest stretch came in the afternoon, when he spoke at the Tech Summit at the Hilton Union Square, played hoops with kids and spoke to fans at NBA All-Star Crossover at the Moscone Center, and made a stop at Nike’s Future Game in Oakland.
“It’s intense, but a lot of fun,” Wembanyama told fans in response to a question from a moderator.
At that same appearance, the 21-year-old Frenchman offered encouragement to youngsters, whether they were involved in basketball or some other sport or activity.
“Work on your weaknesses so they become your strengths,” said Wembanyama, with his mother, Élodie de Fautereau, looking on.
Wembanyama capped the day cheering on Spurs rookie guard Stephon Castle at the Rising Stars mini-tournament at Chase Center in San Francisco.
The 7-foot-3 center’s busy weekend was set to continue Saturday in Oakland, where the All-Stars were set to practice at Oakland Arena after a session with the media. In the evening, he is scheduled to participate in the Skills Challenge at Chase Center with Spurs point guard Chris Paul before cheering on Castle in the Slam Dunk Contest.
The inaugural All-Star Game mini-tournament is set for Sunday night at Chase Center.
Asked during his session with fans who he thought would win MVP, Wembanyama said, “I have to bet on myself.”
