3 takeaways as Spurs drop another heartbreaker to Orlando Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Spurs can tell De’Aaron Fox this much. They are capable of playing games that don’t go down to the very last shot.
That hasn’t been the newly acquired guard’s experience since arriving in a trade with Sacramento earlier this week.
Three games, three nailbiters.
For the second night in a row Saturday, the Spurs were on the wrong end of another down-to-the-wire affair, falling 112-111 against the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center.
“Crunch-time execution is something we have to improve upon,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “Because that’s how close these games are in the balance.”
Paolo Banchero provided the winning points for Orlando, sinking a turnaround jumper well-contested by the Spurs’ Harrison Barnes with 24.7 seconds remaining.
Victor Wembanyama had a chance to win the game for the Spurs at the buzzer, but his 19-footer hit back iron.
It was the Spurs’ second one-point defeat in as many nights, coming on the heels of a 117-116 defeat in Charlotte in which Fox’s apparent game-winning 3-pointer came two tenths of a second after the final horn.
The Spurs led the Magic by 13 points heading into the final three minutes of the third quarter but — in a turn of events that predates Fox — couldn’t extend that lead.
“One thing we have to learn is when we get a lead, how do we keep a lead?” said Fox, whose team won his Spurs debut in Atlanta 126-125. “How can we be up 17 instead of going into the fourth quarter up seven? We have to figure out how to finish a game.”
The Magic pulled off that trick Saturday.
Franz Wagner led the way with 33 points and 12 rebounds, while Banchero contributed 17 points.
The Spurs squandered 25 points from Devin Vassell and 21 from Harrison Barnes, all of which came courtesy of seven 3-pointers.
Wembanyama added 18 points, nine rebounds, four blocks and four steals.
The answer for the Spurs’ as they seek to break their Rodeo Road trip slide in Washington on Monday is simple.
“It’s in the details,” Barnes said.
Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s loss, which dropped the Spurs to 22-28 and further out of the Western Conference play-in race:
1. Spurs can live with final two possessions
Barnes was draped all over Banchero on his tough game-winner. Give him credit.
The look the Spurs got Wembanyama for the win is, perhaps, a little more debatable.
The possession started as a two-man game between Fox and Wembanyama. On the first attempt, Fox tried to get a head of steam toward the basket.
Knowing Orlando had a foul to give, Fox realized he probably wouldn’t get far. He was right. Anthony Black grabbed Fox to take a foul before the speedy guard could shake loose.

“I thought I was about to get downhill, but he grabbed me,” Fox said. “That’s part of the game. You know teams are going to do that.”
On the Spurs’ next crack at it, Fox ran a pick-and-pop with Wembanyama to try and get the 7-foot-3 Frenchman a relatively clean look over the Magic defense.
“I told him, ‘You pick your spot on the court,’ “ Fox said. “Nobody’s going to block your shot. You pick a spot and you do what you do best.”
Wembanyama ended up with the ball near the top of the key with Black on him. He took a dribble to the left to gain separation, then let loose a 20-footer that was just off.
The Spurs have decided they will live with that look.
“He got to his spot,” Fox said. “At this level, that’s all you can ask for.”
2. Should Barnes be in the 3-point shootout?
It was a question some yahoo reporter (ahem, yours truly) asked Barnes partially in jest after his 7-for-10 performance from beyond the arc Saturday.
It turns out, Barnes has thought about it.
“I don’t know what the criteria is,” Barnes said. “Some people say you have to shoot 40%. Some people would say there are four people in the 3-point contest who don’t shoot 40%. But I’m not one to judge.”
Indeed, Barnes entered Saturday’s game hitting 40.8% from 3-point range, matching a career best.
Four contestants: Golden State’s Buddy Hield, Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard, Miami’s Tyler Herro and Detroit’s Cade Cunningham are shooting well below 40% this season. Two others are at least flirting with that mark — the Los Angeles Clippers’ Norm Powell at 39.9% and New York’s Jalen Brunson at 39.2%.
Barnes upped his percentage Saturday by hitting a season-best seven 3-pointers, one off his career high. He made six in the first quarter, matching Manu Ginobili and Bryn Forbes for most in a quarter in Spurs annals.
At one point in that sizzling frame, Barnes made 3-pointers on five consecutive Spurs possessions.

Is Barnes seriously bummed about not being invited to the All-Star 3-point shootout in San Francisco?
“I think it would be fun,” he said “There’s a lot of things that go into who is selected here or there, but I would have loved a shot.”
3. Ten days of help is on the way
A night after being brutalized on the boards in Charlotte, the undersized Spurs were dominated by the bigger Magic on Saturday.
Orlando won the glass 45-34, grabbed 12 offensive boards to win the second-chance battle 20-6 and outscored the Spurs in the paint 56-34.
With Zach Collins now in Chicago and Charles Bassey on the injured list, the Spurs could use a bigger body to backup Wembanyama.
Help is on the way in the form of Bismack Biyombo.
With a 10-day contract in the offing, Biyombo was on hand at the Kia Center on Saturday to see exactly what he is getting into.
The 6-foot-8 Biyombo has played 13 NBA seasons, averaging 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
Since the move was not official Saturday, Spurs personnel was not allowed to comment specifically on Biyombo’s impending addition.
Barnes, however, said the team’s beleaguered frontcourt would welcome all the help it could get.
“There’s still a place in this game for traditional centers,” Barnes said. “There’s value in that. Anytime we can add that depth, it’s important for us.”
If all goes to plan Biyombo is expected to sign his 10-day deal in time to be active for Monday’s game in Washington. None too soon for the Spurs’ overworked frontcourt.
