Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox braces for offseason surgery

ORLANDO, Fla. – De’Aaron Fox did not exactly come to the Spurs held together with super glue and bailing wire.
But it was close.
Having dislocated his left pinkie during training camp with Sacramento last fall, Fox has become accustomed to playing with the little and ring fingers on his shooting hand taped together.
“I’ve been playing with it all season like that,” Fox said.
Fox said he will “more than likely” need surgery this offseason to clean up possible ligament damage.
“I know at this point he’s planning on taping it and playing with it,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “I’m not sure the bigger picture offseason. I’m sure they’ll do whatever’s best for him.”
Despite his pinkie injury – plus a right thumb sprain he suffered late last month with the Kings – Fox has been as advertised since joining the Spurs in a trade earlier this week.
The 27-year-old former All-Star totaled 46 points, 19 assists and seven steals in his first two games with the club, with a third slated for Saturday at Orlando.
The NBA’s 2022-23 Clutch Player of the year came up big late in the Spurs’ otherwise disheartening 117-116 loss at Charlotte on Friday.
Fox’s tie-breaking jumper with 7.2 seconds to play would have been the game-winner, had the Hornets’ Miles Bridges not answered with a 3-pointer of his own.
Fox retaliated with a 3-pointer than would have won the game for the Spurs, but it came a tick after the final horn.
“De’Aaron is one of the most clutch player of the league, so it’s something,” center Victor Wembanyama said. “It’s a big plus that you can’t find by chance anywhere.”
With the Spurs still desperately scrapping to remain in the Western Conference play-in race, playing hurt is a no-brainer for Fox.
“We have something we’re trying to play for,” he said.

Spurs zero in on Biyombo
With a combination of trade season and injuries ravaging their frontcourt depth, the Spurs are nearing an agreement to sign journeyman center Bismack Biyombo to a 10-day contract.
A veteran of 13 NBA seasons, the 32-year-old Biyombo has posted career averages of 5.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. The 6-foot-8 Biyombo would serve as a short-term option in the Spurs’ quest for depth behind All-Star center Victor Wembanyama.
On Monday, the team dealt backup center Zach Collins to Chicago as part of the three-team deal that brought De’Aaron Fox into the fold. The same night, lone remaining backup center Charles Bassey went down with a left knee sprain.
The injury is expected to keep Bassey shelved at least until the All-Star break, creating a need for the Congo-born Biyombo.
The No. 7 overall pick in 2011, Biyombo has bounced around since entering the league with Charlotte. The Spurs will be his seventh team, a list that also includes Toronto, Orlando, Phoenix, Memphis and Oklahoma City.
Castle sets Spurs record
Rookie guard Stephon Castle returned to the bench upon Fox’s arrival. Friday in Charlotte, he demonstrated he could still thrive in that role.
The No. 4 overall pick from Connecticut, Castle exploded for a season-high 33 points against the Hornets, notching the first 30-point game of his NBA career.
That total set a Spurs franchise record for points off the bench from a rookie, eclipsing the 31 points Greg “Cadillac” Anderson posted at Denver on Nov. 20, 1987.
“I thought he tried to play downhill,” Johnson said of Castle. “He did a good job of allowing the game to come to him in terms of playing off the ball, attacking when there was space, catching and shooting in rhythm when it was there as well.”
Castle went 10-of-15 from the field and 10-of-11 from the foul line.
That helped Castle surpass his previous rookie-season scoring best of 26 points, tallied in a Jan. 15 loss to Memphis. Castle’s high in one college season at UConn was 21 points, a total he has reached or surpassed eight times this season.
“You’re out there really just flowing taking what the defense is giving you,” Castle said. “I’ve been super confident these past couple weeks, so just leaning on that.”
