3 takeaways as Spurs fall to Hornets despite Fox’s clutch play

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson warned his players before the game about the physical nature of the Charlotte Hornets.

It didn’t seem to help at all.

Out-muscled all over the court and battered on the boards 53-38 by the fourth-best rebounding team in the NBA, the Spurs fell into a 19-point hole in the first half only to fight back to take the lead on De’Aaron Fox’s 18-foot, pull-up jumper with 7.9 seconds before eventually falling 117-116 to the lowly Hornets on Friday night.

“From the very first possession,” Johnson said, “they were more physical and set a tone with force, and it took us a while to get into the game.”

Miles Bridges sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 1.4 seconds on a kick-out feed from LaMelo Ball to give Charlotte just its 13th win of the season and snap a six-game losing streak.

Fox answered with what appeared to be a winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, but the referees ruled correctly that he did not get it off on time.

“That 1.4 went by quick,” said Fox, who finished with 22 points and six assists in his second game with the Spurs after they acquired him from Sacramento on Monday in a three-team trade.

“I watched (a replay) and I think I hopped after I caught it, so that took away two-tenths, three-tenths of a second. So, I think that’s where it was because 1.4 gives you enough time to definitely take a dribble and get off a shot.”

After opening the scoring on a Victor Wembanyama’s fadeaway jumper 7 seconds into the game, the Spurs didn’t lead again until Fox gave them the 116-114 advantage.

“You have to win games like this,” Fox said. “We can’t put ourselves in an 19-point deficit.”

Bridges finished with 25 points on 10-for-18 from the field and Ball had 24 points and 10 assists for the Hornets (13-36) after returning from a five-game absence due to an injured ankle.

Nick Smith Jr. contributed 19 points for Charlotte, which also got a strong game from Moussa Diabate, who had 15 rebounds, a big reason why the Hornets enjoyed a 27-9 edge in second-chance points.

The Spurs (22-27) wasted an outstanding performance from rookie Stephon Castle, who had a season-high 33 points, the first 30-point game of his NBA career. He hit 10 of 15 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and 10 of 11 free throws.

Victor Wembanyama had 16 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.

Here are three takeaways from the first game of a back-to-back that ends Saturday in Orlando:

The lack of physicality is an ongoing problem

Johnson called the Spurs’ inability to match other team’s physicality “very disappointing.”

It’s a complaint Gregg Popovich issued several times during the previous two seasons before he suffered a stroke Nov. 2.

So what can the Spurs do about it?

“We have to fight early on the floor,” Wembanyama said. “We knew they crash the boards, one of the best teams at second-chance points, so we got to be smart, got to get there before they do. Defense is more than 24 seconds sometimes, so we have to play all the way until we get the ball.”

With reserve big man Charles Bassey likely out until after the All-Star break, the Spurs are forced to play small when Wembanyama goes to the bench, with either Harrison Barnes or Jeremy Sochan at center. Given that configuration, the guards will have to focus more on helping out as rebounders.

“When we’re playing the small ball lineup, guards get switched on to bigs a lot, so crashing the defensive glass is a big part of what coach Mitch always talks to us about,” Castle said. “It also starts our break. They’re mismatched when we’re switching like that, so we have guards on bigs, so it allows us to play faster.”

Castle did just fine coming off the bench

The Connecticut product’s big night dispelled the notion that his offensive game suffers when he is forced to come off the bench.

“He was aggressive,” Johnson said. “He tried to play downhill, did a good job of allowing the game to come to him in terms of playing off the ball, attacking when there was space, catching and shooting in rhythm when it was there as well. And obviously the point total reflects that.”

Castle said he’s becoming more comfortable with the second unit. He returned to bench after the Spurs acquired Fox.

“I would just say we have a lot of shooters in that unit, so it opens the floor up a lot,” Castle said. “We usually go no big in that unit, so we play one through five really fast, and I feel like I strive in transition. (Tonight) my teammates were giving me the ball in great spots and allowing me to play my game.”

Fox is ready to continue to play through pain

The explosive point guard said “more than likely” he will need surgery in the offseason to repair the dislocated pinkie on his left hand.

Fox suffered the injury during training camp with the Kings. Ever since then, he has been taping the pinkie and ring fingers together on his shooting hand due to what he has said is a likely ligament injury.

“I’ve been playing with it all season like that,” he said.

And he plans to continue to do so.

“We have something we’re trying to play for,” he said, referring to a play-in spot.
