Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Charlotte Hornets
The Rodeo Road Trip rolls into Charlotte
The Charlotte Hornets have long been a franchise wandering in the wilderness, desperate for even just a glimpse of the Promised Land. They haven’t won 50 games in the state of North Carolina since Tim Duncan’s rookie year, the 1997-1998 season and have finished above .500 just 4 times since a franchise returned to the state in 2004. Under new majority ownership since last season after Michael Jordan sold his majority stake in the club, there’s not a whole lot to say about the roster outside of LaMelo Ball. Ball, a volume scorer with the green light on a bad team, has dealt with injuries the last 2 seasons and is hurt once again, an ankle issue that’s kept him out since January 27th.
With Ball on the court, this would have been a classic trap game scenario for the Spurs, as he’s the type of player that can get on a roll out of the blue. With him out and the addition of De’Aaron Fox to the roster, losing this game would be a disaster for San Antonio. February is light on tough games for the Spurs and if they want to make a push for a spot in the Play-In, they can’t afford to drop games like tonight’s. There was once a time where this franchise was renowned for being able to, “take care of business,” against struggling ball clubs. With the addition of Fox to the roster, there’s a chance that old norm can make a return.
San Antonio Spurs (22-26) at Charlotte Hornets (12-36)
February 7 2025 | 6:00 PM CT
Watch: FDSS | Listen: WOAI (1200 AM)
Spurs Injuries: Charles Bassey, MCL sprain (day to day)
Hornets Injuries: LaMelo Ball, ankle (OUT), Cody Martin, core (day to day), Vasilije Micic, ankle (day to day), Josh Okogie, hamstring (OUT), Brandon Miller, Grant Williams, and Tre Mann, OUT for the season
What to watch for
- The trio of Fox, Victor Wembanyama, and Devin Vassell combined for 64 of San Antonio’s 126 points in the win at Atlanta. While the entire team will benefit from what Fox brings to the table, no one may benefit more than Vassell, who has struggled at times this season with being a consistent #2 option for San Antonio. Fox can attack the paint off the dribble in ways that no one on the roster really can, which has the benefit of bending a defense and creating openings for both himself and others. Tasked with much less of the creation side of things, Vassell could really flourish playing alongside Fox.
- Stephon Castle didn’t fill up the stat sheet against Atlanta, but he looked more comfortable coming off the bench than he had at any other point this season. Castle, a contender for Rookie of the Year, has started 29 of San Antonio’s 48 games this season and has shown more than a few flourishes of his potential, but has struggled when coming off the bench. Against Atlanta he only played 20 minutes, but he was able to stay aggressive and make the most of his time, getting to the free throw line multiple times and throwing down a vicious dunk that was yet another teaser ahead of his participation in this season’s Dunk Contest. With Tre Jones gone Castle is the sole backup point guard and against Atlanta, he played like he understood that.
- Fox played 37 minutes in his debut against the Hawks, in line with what he was playing this season in Sacramento more than any other player on the roster. Should this continue now that he’s in San Antonio, he would lead the Spurs in MPG by about 4 minutes (Victor’s 33 MPG is 1st among players that have been there all season).
