Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) is blocked by San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama (1) during the first half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Friday, Jan. 31, 2025.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will play for a team at the inaugural All-Star tournament loaded with international stars like himself.

The All-Star draft was held Thursday night on TNT, with analysts Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley picking the three eight-man squads from a pool of 24 All-Stars for the Feb. 16 competition in San Francisco.

Barkley selected only players with international ties: the 21-year-old Frenchman Wembanyama; Nikola Jokic of Serbia; Giannis Antetokounmpo of Greece; Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Canada; Pascal Siakam of Cameroon; Alperen Sengun of Turkey; Karl-Anthony Towns, whose mother is Dominican; and Donovan Mitchell, whose mother is Panamanian…

Team Shaq includes LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, James Harden and Jaylen Brown.

Team Kenny is comprised of Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, Jaren Jackson Jr., Jalen Williams, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, Cade Cunningham and Tyler Hero.

LeBron James, a 21-time All-Star, was the No. 1 pick. Wembanyama was selected 12th.

The NBA came up with the tournament format in the hopes of making the elite gathering of NBA stars more competitive after last year’s contest produced a 211-186 final that featured basically only 3-pointers and dunks…

This year’s All-Star event will be a four-team tournament: the winner of the Rising Stars competition for first- and second-year players will be the fourth team. There will be two semifinal games, then the winners will play for the All-Star championship — and the first team to 40 points in those games win.

The winning Rising Stars team that advances to the All-Star tournament will be called Team Candace in honor of Candace Parker.

Wembanyama is an All-Star for the first time after winning rookie of the year last season. He will lead the Spurs against the Hornets on Friday night in Charlotte.

Wembanyama will be busy in San Francisco. The NBA announced Thursday that he and point guard Chris Paul will compete as Team Spurs in the skills skills competition Feb. 15.

The other skills competition participants will be Mitchell and Evan Mobley (Team Cavs), Draymond Green and Moses Moody (Team Warriors) and Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr (Team Rooks).

Trip to Charlotte has ‘fond memories’ for Barnes

A trip to North Carolina is always fun for former Tar Heel Harrison Barnes.

“I have a lot of fond memories of North Carolina, so to be able to come here and play in front of friends and family, it’s always good,” said Barnes, who played two seasons at UNC from 2010-2012 before Golden State selected him seventh overall in the 2012 NBA Draft.

Asked about the Tar Heels’ 13-10 record after last week’s 87-70 loss to rival Duke, Barnes said, “It’s been a rough year. (Acting Spurs coach) Mitch (Johnson) is a Stanford guy, and we lost to Stanford (72-71 on Jan. 18). It’s all over the place right now, but we’ll see what we can do the second part of the season.”
