Despite the Spurs’ quiet trade deadline day, their future prospects improve

NBA: Sacramento Kings at San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs didn’t acquire the backup center they needed, but the Hawks’ 2025 first-round pick they own is looking more valuable after the deadline.

The trade deadline has passed. There was a lot of movement in the hours preceding it, even after the bigger trades happened in the days leading up to it. The Spurs didn’t make any additions except for acquiring Patrick Baldwin Jr. for money with no intention to keep him. The time for big roster changes is over until the offseason.

Overall, it was a decidedly good week for San Antonio. They landed a second star and managed to keep their core together. It wasn’t an exciting Thursday, but that’s fine. Not every weakness has to be addressed simultaneously. Now that the dust has settled, let’s look at how things stand.

The Spurs still need a backup center but have an open roster spot for the buyout market

The De’Aaron Fox trade was the big move the Spurs made this season. There was not going to be any significant deal after that, since they have a core they clearly believe in and want to see it develop some chemistry before making any big decision. Still, the deadline passed and San Antonio has no quality backup center and few big bodies in general.

Zach Collins is gone. Charles Bassey is injured and hasn’t been effective. Jeremy Sochan tries his hardest and often succeeds at being a small ball center, but whenever Victor Wembanyama gets in foul trouble and the Spurs have no option but to go small, the defense suffers. Sandro Mamukelashvili is an option when San Antonio needs shooting, but he’s not a center. It seemed like the front office missed out on the opportunity to round out the roster by not getting a big man who could mitigate the obvious issues that arise during the non-Wemby minutes.

The good news is after the deals they made for Fox and the soon-to-be-waived Patrick Baldwin Jr., San Antonio will have an open roster spot to add a big man in the buyout market. The Spurs don’t have more money to offer than others but can offer a chance at rotation minutes. We don’t know yet which names will be available and normally there are no difference-makers that get waived, but the Silver and Black don’t need a big addition. All that’s necessary is someone who can give them a solid 15 minutes a night on the non-Wemby, non-small ball minutes. A stretch five would be preferable, as he would pair better with Sochan off the bench, but any capable center would help, and there should be some in the free-agent pool.

If everything else fails, they can just ride out the season with Bassey and Mamu. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than trading several second-rounders or a first-rounder for someone who won’t see the floor for extended minutes unless Wemby is hurt. The Spurs made a big move that improved them significantly this season. There will be time to make the little ones.

The Hawks’ (and Raptors’) deadline improved the value of one of the Spurs’ best draft assets

Atlanta lost Jalen Johnson for the year and went into the deadline skidding down the standings. They had an expensive roster, so they made some cost-cutting moves. First, they traded De’Andre Hunter to the Cavaliers for Caris LeVert, Georges Niang and second-rounders. Then, they moved Bogdan Bogdanovic and second-rounders to the Clippers for Bones Hyland and Terrance Mann. Finally, they sent Cody Zeller and a second-rounder to the Rockets to get under the luxury tax.

Now, those moves don’t necessarily represent huge net losses in talent for Atlanta. LaVert can fill the secondary creator role that Bogdanovic was filling and Niang can provide shooting from the forward spots. Mann is an above-average defender at the point of attack, and Hyland might get hot every four games or so if he gets minutes. They lost some size and athleticism, but still have a decent roster. The big issue with the moves is the message it sends to the remaining players. The Hawks’ front office just told their guys that their priority is to save money instead of improving the roster. Two of the players they traded had been in Atlanta for years. They are already in a precarious situation and feel like first-round fodder at best. What’s the motivation to try their hardest during the second half of the season?

Even if they don’t give it their all, it’s possible the Hawks remain in a play-in spot and potentially get to the playoffs because the East is a trash fire outside of the top four. But something interesting happened before the deadline. The Raptors, one of the teams behind Atlanta in the standings, added talent by sending Bruce Brown to the Pelicans for Brandon Ingram and didn’t trade any of their main rotation guys. Toronto is not going to turn into a good team overnight, but if they actually try to win every night, they could put pressure on the teams ahead of them. If the 76ers ever get healthy and the Raptors make a push, there’s a chance Atlanta doesn’t even get a play-in spot. It’s not a certainty, but it’s something to monitor for the Spurs, which might get a consecutive draft with two good lottery picks.
